Chapter 13: The Truth Inside The Envelope
I didn’t go alone.
Evelyn expected me to.
That was the first mistake she made.
For years, my mother had survived because people believed she was always ten steps ahead.
But she had forgotten something.
A person who controls through fear eventually starts believing everyone is afraid of them.
I wasn’t.
Not anymore.
Marcus watched from a distance.
Ethan stayed with Clara and Noah.
And I walked into the old Carter estate carrying an empty envelope.
Because the real envelope was already secured.
The moment I entered the study, Evelyn smiled.
“You came.””
I looked around.
The room was exactly how I remembered it from childhood.
My father’s chair.
His books.
His photographs.
Everything preserved.
Like she was trying to keep a ghost alive.
“You wanted me here.””
She nodded.
“I wanted you to understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That I did what I had to do.””
I laughed quietly.
“You almost destroyed my wife.””
“I protected this family.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You protected your power.””
Her expression hardened.
“You sound like your father.””
“That’s because he was right about you.””
For a moment, something flashed in her eyes.
Pain.
Then anger.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””
“I know exactly what you sacrificed.””
I looked around the room.
“Everyone.””
Silence.
She walked toward the desk.
“Your father was weak.””
I stared at her.
“He cared too much.””
“He loved people.””
“And that made him vulnerable.””
She opened a drawer.
Then pulled out an old photograph.
A picture of my father holding me as a child.
“You think he saved you.””
She placed it on the desk.
“But he destroyed everything trying to be everyone’s hero.””
I didn’t respond.
Because I knew what she was trying to do.
She wanted me angry.
Confused.
Emotional.
The same way she had controlled everyone else.
“Where is the evidence?”” I asked.
Her face changed.
“You really think you’re ready?””
“Yes.””
She looked at me for several seconds.
Then reached into a cabinet.
She pulled out a small box.
Inside was a flash drive.
“This contains everything.””
I didn’t move.
“What everything?””
“The reason your father changed his will.””
I watched her carefully.
“Why give it to me?””
“Because I’m tired.””
That surprised me.
For the first time, she sounded human.
Not powerful.
Not cold.
Just exhausted.
“I spent years protecting something that was already gone.””
“What was gone?””
She looked at the photograph.
“Your family.””
Before I could answer, the study door opened.
Victor walked in.
My expression changed immediately.
“You.””
Victor looked nervous.
Evelyn turned.
“Why are you here?””
“I told you I would handle it.””
My eyes narrowed.
Handle what?
Victor stepped closer.
Then I noticed something.
His hands were shaking.
Not with anger.
With fear.
“Evelyn,” he said quietly.
“It’s over.””
She looked at him.
“You don’t tell me when things are over.””
Victor swallowed.
“You promised me protection.””
The room went silent.
I looked between them.
“You were never partners.””
They both looked at me.
“You were using each other.””
Victor looked away.
And that was when I knew.
There was something bigger.
Something even Evelyn didn’t control.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Marcus.
*We have the original files. Open the flash drive only after you leave.*
I looked at Evelyn.
“I know what you did.””
She shook her head.
“No, Daniel.””
Her voice became quiet.
“You know what I allowed.””
A chill moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
She looked toward Victor.
Then back at me.
“The person who caused your father’s death…”
May you like
She paused.
“Was never me.””
