Chapter 4: The Recording They Tried To Erase

I didn’t sleep that night.

I sat in the private security office inside Carter Tower with the memory card Marissa gave me sitting on the desk in front of me.

A tiny piece of plastic.

That was all.

But somehow, it felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

Because inside it was the answer to why my wife almost died in my own home.

Marcus stood beside the computer screen.

“We made three copies,” he said.

“One offline. One encrypted. One stored separately.””

I nodded.

“Play it.””

The screen showed my kitchen.

The timestamp was six days earlier.

The day Clara came home from the hospital.

At first, everything looked normal.

Clara entered slowly, carrying Noah in her arms.

She looked exhausted.

But she smiled.

That was what hurt the most.

She smiled because she thought she was coming home.

Then Evelyn appeared.

My mother walked toward her with a smile that looked warm from a distance.

But I knew her.

I knew that smile.

It was the same one she used before delivering a criticism disguised as advice.

The audio was faint.

Marcus increased the volume.

“You’re home now,” Evelyn said.

Clara smiled weakly.

“I just need to rest for a little while.””

Evelyn laughed softly.

“Rest?””

My hand tightened.

The video continued.

“You’re a mother now, Clara. Things change.””

Clara looked down at Noah.

“I know. I just had surgery.””

“And I’m trying to help you become stronger.””

Then Evelyn placed a list on the counter.

A schedule.

My stomach turned.

“What is that?”” I whispered.

Marcus paused.

“Keep watching.””

The next minutes showed Clara reading the paper.

Her face slowly changed.

“She made her cook, clean, and serve guests?”” I asked.

Marcus nodded.

“But there’s more.””

The footage continued.

A few hours later, Victor entered.

He stood beside Evelyn.

“You understand what happens if she refuses,” Victor said.

I froze.

My own employee.

Threatening my wife.

Clara looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn answered.

“It means Daniel will eventually realize you’re not ready for this family.””

Clara’s eyes filled with tears.

“You wouldn’t do that.””

Evelyn leaned closer.

“You have no idea what I’m capable of.””

I stopped the video.

I couldn’t watch another second.

Marcus didn’t speak.

He didn’t need to.

The evidence was already there.

My mother had not been helping Clara.

She had been breaking her.

But there was something I still didn’t understand.

“Why Noah?”” I asked.

Marcus looked at me.

“We’re still investigating.””

I restarted the footage.

This time, I watched the background.

The details.

The things most people would miss.

At exactly 2:17 a.m., Evelyn entered Noah’s nursery.

She looked around.

Then she picked up a folder from inside the cabinet.

A folder I had never seen before.

“What is that?”” I asked.

Marcus zoomed in.

The image became clearer.

My blood froze.

The folder had my company logo on it.

“No.””

I stood up.

“Find out what that is.””

Marcus nodded.

“We already started.””

My phone rang.

It was the hospital.

I answered immediately.

“Hello?””

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes.””

“It’s about your wife.””

My heart stopped.

“What happened?””

“She woke up.””

I rushed out of the office.

For the first time in hours, I felt something close to hope.

But when I reached Clara’s room, I saw the fear in her eyes.

Not confusion.

Not pain.

Fear.

“Daniel…”

I sat beside her.

“I’m here.””

She looked toward the door.

Then whispered:

“You can’t trust your mother.””

My chest tightened.

“I know.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“You don’t understand.””

I leaned closer.

“What don’t I understand?””

Clara grabbed my hand.

“Evelyn wasn’t trying to punish me.””

A pause.

“She was trying to force you.””

I stared at her.

“Force me to do what?””

Clara looked terrified.

Before she answered, the hospital room door opened.

A nurse stepped inside.

“Mr. Carter?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

“There’s someone outside asking to see your wife.””

“Who?””

The nurse hesitated.

Then looked at Clara.

“It’s your mother.””

Clara immediately gripped my hand harder.

“Don’t let her in.””

And that was when I realized.

May you like

Whatever Evelyn wanted…

She was not finished.
