Chapter 14: The Person Behind Everything
I left the estate with the flash drive.
I didn’t speak.
I didn’t look back.
Because one sentence kept repeating in my mind.
The person who caused my father’s death was never my mother.
When I reached the safe location, Marcus had already prepared everything.
Ethan was waiting.
Clara sat on the couch with Noah sleeping peacefully in her arms.
Seeing them reminded me why this mattered.
This was never about a company.
Never about money.
It was about protecting the people I loved.
I connected the flash drive.
The first file appeared.
A video.
Recorded five years earlier.
The day my father died.
My hands went cold.
The screen showed my father inside his office.
Alive.
Talking.
And someone else was there.
I leaned closer.
The person turned around.
My heart stopped.
Victor.
Not the assistant I knew.
A younger Victor.
Working with my father.
My father looked angry.
“You crossed a line.””
Victor replied.
“You left me no choice.””
I watched silently.
My father stood.
“You threatened my family.””
Victor smiled.
“No. I reminded you what happens when powerful men forget who helped them rise.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan whispered:
“He was the one.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t have proof.””
Marcus continued opening files.
Bank records.
Messages.
Contracts.
Everything connected.
Victor had been manipulating Evelyn for years.
He convinced her that my father was going to destroy the family.
He convinced her that control was the only way to survive.
Then after my father died, he stayed close.
Waiting.
Using her obsession against her.
“He didn’t want the company,” Marcus said.
I looked at him.
“What did he want?””
Marcus opened another file.
A property transfer.
My eyes widened.
“He wanted the family trust.””
Ethan nodded.
“Your father discovered it before he died.””
“And Victor killed him to hide it.””
Silence.
Then Clara spoke.
“But why come back now?””
Everyone looked at her.
She held Noah closer.
“Why would he risk exposing himself?””
That was the question.
Marcus searched through the files.
Then stopped.
“Because he already made his move.””
“What?””
He turned the screen.
A document appeared.
A transfer agreement.
Signed digitally.
My name was there.
But it wasn’t my signature.
My stomach dropped.
“He forged it.””
Marcus nodded.
“He’s trying to take control before anyone can stop him.””
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Victor’s voice came through.
“You finally understand.””
My anger rose.
“Where are you?””
“Somewhere you should have checked years ago.””
“What do you want?””
“I want what your father promised me.””
“He promised you nothing.””
A laugh.
“You really believe that?””
I looked at the documents.
“Your plan failed.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“Your mother failed.””
A pause.
“But I didn’t.””
The call ended.
Seconds later, Marcus received an alert.
His face changed.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Victor accessed the Carter headquarters.””
My heart sank.
“What is he doing?””
Marcus stared at the screen.
“He’s deleting everything.””
I stood.
“Then we go there.””
Clara grabbed my hand.
“Daniel.””
I looked at her.
“Don’t let him take everything.””
I kissed her forehead.
“I won’t.””
Because this time…
May you like
I wasn’t fighting for an inheritance.
I was fighting for my family.
