Chapter 8: The House Built on Secrets

The ballroom was silent as I listened to the voice on the phone.

“My life?””

Laura Bennett sighed.

“I know this is difficult.””

I looked around.

Difficult wasn’t the word.

My entire reality was collapsing in front of me.

“Where are you?”” I asked.

“Outside the hotel.””

I turned toward the entrance.

A woman stood beyond the glass doors.

Late forties.

Professional clothes.

Holding a briefcase.

She looked nervous.

Like she knew she was walking into a disaster.

“Let her in,” I said.

Michael immediately reacted.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

The word came out too quickly.

Too desperately.

“No?””

I faced him.

“Why not?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was all I needed.

The hotel manager opened the doors.

Laura walked inside.

She looked at Michael first.

Then me.

“I’m sorry.””

I nodded.

“Everyone keeps saying that tonight.””

Her eyes lowered.

“I know.””

She opened her briefcase.

“I should have come sooner.””

Michael stepped forward.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

Laura looked at him.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

She removed a folder.

“These are financial records from the past ten years.””

My stomach tightened.

Michael shook his head.

“This is private information.””

Laura looked at me.

“Only because he wanted it to be.””

She handed me the folder.

I opened it.

The first page was an account summary.

Then another.

Then another.

Numbers.

Transfers.

Payments.

My eyes moved quickly.

And then I saw something.

A familiar name.

Mine.

“Why is my name on these accounts?””

Laura took a breath.

“Because Michael used your identity.””

The room went still.

“What?””

Michael’s face hardened.

“Don’t listen to her.””

Laura ignored him.

“Five years ago, Michael opened investment accounts using documents connected to you.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He shook his head.

“This is ridiculous.””

“Why?””

My voice cracked.

“Answer me.””

He looked away.

And again, that silence was an answer.

Laura continued.

“He transferred money from joint accounts into private accounts.””

“How much?””

She hesitated.

“Over $400,000.””

The number hit me.

I stepped back.

“No.””

Michael moved toward me.

“Rebecca, listen.””

I raised my hand.

“Don’t.””

My voice was barely above a whisper.

“Do not tell me this is a misunderstanding.””

He stopped.

Because he knew.

There were too many people.

Too many documents.

Too many truths.

Chloe looked at her father like she didn’t recognize him.

“Dad…”

Michael looked at her.

“I did what I had to do.””

That sentence changed everything.

Not “I didn’t.””

Not “they’re lying.””

Just:

I did what I had to do.

I stared at him.

“For what?””

His jaw tightened.

“For this family.””

I almost laughed.

“This family?””

I pointed around.

“Look at us.””

Nobody spoke.

“You destroyed every person you claimed you were protecting.””

Michael’s expression changed.

For the first time, he looked angry.

“You don’t understand what I sacrificed.””

I stepped closer.

“Sacrificed?””

My voice became stronger.

“You sacrificed me.””

The room went quiet.

Then Chloe whispered:

“I think I know why.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked terrified.

But she continued.

“Dad always said Rebecca was too trusting.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

Chloe wiped her tears.

“He said you would do anything for people you loved.””

Michael looked at her.

“Stop talking.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“I’m tired.””

She looked at me.

“I’m tired of pretending.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Chloe.””

But this time, she didn’t stop.

“He told me if I made you angry enough, you would leave.””

My blood ran cold.

“Leave?””

She nodded.

“He wanted you gone.””

The words hurt.

But they also explained everything.

The wedding.

The public humiliation.

The cruelty.

It wasn’t just Chloe’s anger.

It was part of something bigger.

Michael had been pushing me toward the door.

But why?

Laura answered.

“Because he needed access to everything.””

I looked at her.

“What everything?””

She hesitated.

Then opened another folder.

“This.””

Inside was a copy of a document.

A document with my signature.

Except I had never signed it.

I read the title.

*Property Transfer Agreement.*

My hands went cold.

Because according to this document…

May you like

I had already given Michael ownership of our home.

And the signature at the bottom looked exactly like mine.
