Chapter 11: The Reason He Chose Me
The room waited.
Even the guests who had planned to leave stayed frozen near the doors.
Because everyone wanted to hear the same thing.
Why?
Why had Michael chosen me?
I had asked myself that question many times over the years.
At first, the answer seemed obvious.
Love.
He told me I was different.
He told me I brought peace into his life.
He told me I saved him.
But now, standing across from him, I wasn’t sure which parts had been real.
Michael looked at me.
“You want the truth?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
He laughed quietly.
“You always did.””
The way he said it made my skin crawl.
Like my honesty had been a weakness.
“Tell me.””
He looked around the room.
“I met Rebecca when I was at my lowest.””
I remembered that time.
Michael was struggling.
His business had failed.
He was raising Chloe alone.
He told me he was drowning.
And I believed him.
“I needed someone stable,” he continued.
My heart sank.
Stable.
Not loved.
Not wanted.
Stable.
“I needed someone who could rebuild what I had lost.””
I stared at him.
“And you thought that was me?””
“Yes.””
The honesty was brutal.
“You had everything I didn’t.””
I whispered:
“Money?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“Trust.””
The answer surprised me.
Michael continued.
“People believed you. They respected you. They saw you as someone good.””
I felt sick.
“So you wanted that.””
“I wanted a future.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You wanted my future.””
For a moment, he looked angry.
Then he smiled.
“Maybe.””
Chloe looked horrified.
“Dad…”
Michael turned toward her.
“Don’t act innocent.””
She stepped back.
“I’m not.””
Her voice shook.
“But I didn’t know this.””
Michael laughed.
“You knew enough.””
The accusation hurt her.
And I saw it.
The moment Chloe realized she had been used too.
She wasn’t his partner.
She was another piece on his board.
Claire moved closer to her.
“Chloe.””
But Chloe shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at Michael.
“Did you really make me hate her?””
Michael didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Chloe covered her mouth.
“I thought I was protecting myself.””
Her eyes moved toward me.
“I thought Rebecca was trying to replace Mom.””
I stayed silent.
Because part of me wanted to comfort her.
Another part remembered the slap.
The humiliation.
The words.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“You need to understand something.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice softened.
“But you don’t.””
Everyone listened.
“I never wanted to replace your mother.””
Claire looked down.
“I know.””
I continued.
“I never needed you to call me Mom.””
Chloe’s eyes filled.
“I just needed you to stop treating me like I was nothing.””
The tears finally fell.
“I’m sorry.””
This time, she meant it.
I believed her.
But forgiveness was not the same as forgetting.
Michael interrupted.
“You’re all acting like I’m the only villain here.””
I turned toward him.
“What does that mean?””
He pointed at Claire.
“She left.””
Claire’s face tightened.
“She was gone.””
“She was afraid because of you.””
“You believe her?””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
The answer came quickly.
Michael froze.
Because he realized something.
I didn’t need more proof.
I already knew.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Mr. Reynolds, you should leave.””
Michael laughed.
“You think I’m walking away?””
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
“You have no choice.””
Michael looked at him.
Then at me.
“You still don’t understand.””
He moved closer.
“You think tonight was about exposing me?””
Nobody spoke.
Michael smiled.
“Tonight was about exposing you.””
I frowned.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
He reached into his pocket.
My body tensed.
He pulled out a phone.
“Because I recorded every conversation.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?””
Michael pressed the screen.
“I knew this day might come.””
A recording started.
My own voice filled the ballroom.
A conversation from months earlier.
My voice saying:
“I’ll do anything for Chloe. Even if she never sees me as her mother.””
My stomach dropped.
Michael looked satisfied.
“Everyone thinks Rebecca is a victim.””
He looked around.
“But I have proof she was desperate to control this family.””
Chloe stared at him.
“That’s not what she meant.””
Michael smiled.
“Isn’t it?””
The recording continued.
But then another voice appeared.
A voice that wasn’t mine.
A voice I recognized.
Michael’s.
And the words he said next changed everything.
*“Good. Keep making her feel responsible. Once the wedding is over, she’ll sign anything.””*
The room went silent.
Michael’s face turned white.
Because he realized something.
The recording he played…
Wasn’t the only recording.
Daniel reached into his briefcase.
And removed a small device.
“I believe you forgot something, Mr. Reynolds.””
Michael stared.
“What is that?””
Daniel placed it on the table.
“The original recording.””
May you like
And this time…
There was nowhere left for Michael to hide.
