Chapter 3: The Secret Behind Her Anger
The hotel manager’s question hung in the air.
“We’ll need a new payment method immediately.””
Nobody moved.
The music had stopped.
The guests who had been laughing moments earlier now watched Chloe like she was a stranger.
She looked at Michael.
“Dad?””
Michael didn’t answer.
For the first time all evening, he looked lost.
“Chloe,” he said, “what have you done?””
Her eyes widened.
“What have I done?””
She pointed at me.
“She embarrassed me at my own wedding.””
I almost laughed.
Almost.
Instead, I looked at the stack of invoices.
“Embarrassed you?””
My voice was calm.
“That’s what you think happened?””
Chloe’s jaw tightened.
“You’re trying to punish me.””
“No.””
I looked around the room.
“I’m finally allowing you to experience the consequences of your own choices.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Chloe, did you know the wedding wasn’t fully paid?””
She didn’t answer.
That was all the answer anyone needed.
His face changed.
“You told me everything was covered.””
“I thought it was.””
“You thought?””
His voice became louder.
“Chloe, this is our wedding.””
She lowered her voice.
“Don’t do this here.””
Ethan looked around.
“Everyone is already here.””
The truth was already here too.
Michael walked toward me.
“Rebecca…”
I looked at him.
He stopped.
Maybe he saw something in my face.
Maybe he finally understood how much damage had been done.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
I swallowed.
“Are you?””
His eyes dropped.
“I should have stopped her.””
“Yes,” I said quietly.
“You should have.””
The words hurt him.
Good.
They were supposed to.
For years, Michael had loved peace more than honesty.
Whenever Chloe said something cruel, he explained it away.
“She’s young.””
“She’s grieving.””
“She doesn’t mean it.””
But people eventually show you who they are.
And eventually, excuses run out.
The hotel manager cleared his throat.
“Mrs. Bennett, there is another matter.””
I turned.
“What matter?””
He opened another folder.
“Before we proceed, I was asked to give you this.””
He handed me a sealed envelope.
I frowned.
“I don’t understand.””
“I was instructed to deliver it only after the payment authorization changed.””
Chloe’s face went pale.
“What is that?””
I looked at the envelope.
“I don’t know.””
I opened it.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
A name.
A date.
And a signature.
My hands went cold.
Because the signature belonged to Chloe.
Michael noticed my expression.
“What is it?””
I didn’t answer.
I read the document again.
Then I looked at Chloe.
The anger in her face disappeared.
She knew.
She knew exactly what I had found.
“What did you do?”” Michael asked her.
Chloe stepped back.
“I can explain.””
Ethan stared at her.
“Explain what?””
I held up the paper.
“For the last six months, Chloe has been telling everyone she was protecting herself from me.””
Nobody spoke.
“But this says something different.””
Chloe’s eyes filled with fear.
“Rebecca, don’t.””
That was the first time all night she sounded afraid.
Not angry.
Not arrogant.
Afraid.
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Her lips trembled.
“Because you don’t understand.””
“Then help me understand.””
The ballroom doors opened again.
A woman entered.
Older.
Elegant.
Someone I had never seen before.
She walked directly toward Chloe.
And when Chloe saw her, all the color drained from her face.
The woman held a folder in her hand.
“I’m sorry I’m late,” she said.
Everyone turned.
She looked at me.
Then at Chloe.
Then she spoke the sentence that changed everything.
“Rebecca, you deserve to know the truth about what happened before this wedding.””
I stared at her.
“What truth?””
The woman opened the folder.

And Chloe whispered one word.
“Mom…”
