Chapter 5: The Lie Hidden in the Contract

My name stared back at me from the paper.

REBECCA REYNOLDS.

I read the line again.

Then again.

My fingers tightened around the document.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered immediately.

That frightened me more than the document itself.

Michael stepped closer.

“Rebecca, let me see.””

I pulled it away.

“No.””

The reaction surprised him.

But I couldn’t explain it.

Not yet.

For years, I had trusted everyone in this room.

And now I wasn’t sure who deserved that trust.

Claire took a deep breath.

“That document is a legal agreement.””

“What kind of agreement?””

Her eyes moved toward Chloe.

“A guardianship agreement.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at Chloe.

“What does that mean?””

She started crying.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

“That sentence doesn’t answer my question.””

Claire spoke softly.

“After I left, Michael filed paperwork stating that I was unfit to care for Chloe.””

Michael’s face changed.

“That was fifteen years ago.””

“Yes,” Claire said.

“And you remember why.””

I looked at Michael.

He looked uncomfortable.

Not confused.

Uncomfortable.

That difference mattered.

“What aren’t you telling me?”” I asked.

Michael rubbed his forehead.

“Rebecca…”

“No.””

My voice was louder than I intended.

“No more protecting people.””

The guests watched silently.

Some had already left.

Others stayed because they wanted the truth.

Honestly, I couldn’t blame them.

I wanted it too.

Claire continued.

“Michael told the court I abandoned Chloe.””

Michael immediately interrupted.

“Because you did.””

Claire looked at him.

“No.””

The single word carried years of pain.

“I left because you threatened to take her away from me.””

Michael’s face hardened.

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then tell her.””

He said nothing.

That silence was an answer.

I felt something inside me crack.

Not because Claire was telling the truth.

Not because Michael was lying.

Because I suddenly realized I had built my entire life around a story someone else created.

Chloe wiped her tears.

“Dad said Mom was dangerous.””

I looked at her.

“And you believed him?””

She nodded slowly.

“I was eight.””

Her voice broke.

“I didn’t know who was telling the truth.””

My anger weakened.

Because she was right.

She was a child.

But she wasn’t eight anymore.

She was twenty-four.

Old enough to understand what hurting someone meant.

Old enough to know a wedding was not the place to destroy a person.

I looked at her.

“And three years ago?””

Her face changed.

“What?””

“You found your mother three years ago.””

She looked away.

“How?””

Claire answered.

“She found me.””

Chloe closed her eyes.

“I saw an old photo online.””

She swallowed.

“I recognized her.””

“And?””

“And I contacted her.””

The room felt painfully quiet.

“So you knew.””

“Yes.””

“You knew the woman everyone thought was gone was alive.””

“Yes.””

“And you still let me pay for everything?””

Chloe’s tears fell.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice became softer.

“You didn’t know how to lose the person paying for your wedding.””

She flinched.

Because she knew there was truth in that.

Ethan, who had been silent for several minutes, finally spoke.

“Chloe…”

She looked at him.

“Did you invite her here?””

Chloe froze.

“What?””

“Your mother.””

Ethan looked at Claire.

“Did you invite her to our wedding?””

Chloe didn’t answer.

And suddenly, I noticed something strange.

Claire wasn’t dressed like a guest.

She was dressed like someone who expected to be seen.

Someone who expected a confrontation.

I turned toward her.

“You came here knowing what would happen.””

Claire lowered her eyes.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She opened the folder again.

“I received a message from Chloe two weeks ago.””

“What message?””

Claire looked at Chloe.

“She asked me to come because she wanted to finally tell you.””

I looked at Chloe.

“You were going to tell me?””

She nodded.

“I was.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Her lips trembled.

“Because Dad found out.””

Everyone looked at Michael.

He went completely still.

“What does that mean?””

Chloe whispered:

“He told me if I brought Mom here, he would make sure I regretted it.””

The air disappeared from the room.

Michael’s face turned pale.

“That’s not what I said.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Yes, it is.””

She pulled out her phone.

“I recorded the conversation.””

Michael stared at her.

“You wouldn’t.””

Claire pressed a button.

A voice filled the ballroom.

His voice.

“Don’t bring Claire back into our lives. Rebecca doesn’t need to know what happened.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Michael looked at me.

May you like

And for the first time in our marriage…

I saw fear in his eyes.
