Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew My Past

The word stopped the entire room.

“Mom…”

Chloe’s voice was barely audible.

The woman standing in the doorway didn’t look surprised.

She looked hurt.

I stared between them, trying to understand what I was seeing.

Because the woman Chloe had just called “Mom” was not a stranger.

She was someone from my past.

Someone I had spent years trying to forget.

Michael noticed my expression.

“Rebecca?””

I didn’t answer.

The woman stepped closer, holding the folder against her chest.

“Hello, Rebecca.””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Do I know you?”” I asked.

A sad smile appeared on her face.

“You used to.””

The room felt smaller.

The guests were still watching.

The cameras were still recording.

But suddenly, none of that mattered.

All I could see was the woman standing in front of me.

“I’m Claire,” she said.

My breath caught.

Claire.

A name I hadn’t heard in fifteen years.

A name connected to a chapter of my life I had buried.

Michael looked confused.

“Rebecca, who is she?””

I looked at him.

“I…”

I couldn’t finish the sentence.

Because how could I explain?

How could I tell my husband that the woman standing in front of us was the person who had disappeared from my life without a goodbye?

The person who knew the truth about the one thing I had never told anyone.

Chloe’s biological mother.

The room erupted in whispers.

“She’s alive?””

“That’s her mother?””

“I thought she passed away.””

I turned sharply toward Chloe.

“She told you I was dead?””

Chloe looked away.

That tiny movement answered everything.

My heart sank.

Claire closed her eyes.

“I never wanted this to happen like this.””

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I didn’t know what else to do.

“Really?””

I looked at Chloe.

“Because I think this is exactly how you wanted it.””

“No,” Chloe said quickly.

For the first time, she sounded like the scared little girl I remembered.

“No, Rebecca.””

I stepped closer.

“Then tell me why your mother is standing here.””

Chloe opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Claire looked at the floor.

“Because I owe you the truth.””

Michael stepped between us.

“Someone needs to start explaining.””

Claire nodded.

“You’re right.””

She opened the folder.

“Fifteen years ago, I made a decision that destroyed three people’s lives.””

She looked at me.

“Mine. Chloe’s. And yours.””

My stomach tightened.

I remembered that time clearly.

The phone calls.

The accusations.

The night Michael’s first wife disappeared.

Everyone believed Claire had abandoned Chloe.

Everyone believed she had left her daughter behind.

And when Michael met me years later, he told me the same story.

A broken woman who walked away.

A child who needed stability.

A family that needed rebuilding.

So I stepped in.

I became the person who packed lunches.

The person who sat through school plays.

The person who stayed awake during nightmares.

The person who paid for everything Chloe needed.

But now Claire was standing here.

Alive.

And Chloe had known.

“You knew she was alive,” I said.

Chloe’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than I expected.

“How long?””

She hesitated.

“Three years.””

Three years.

The room went silent again.

Michael looked at his daughter.

“You knew your mother was alive for three years?””

Chloe wiped her face.

“I didn’t know what to do.””

“What to do?”” Michael repeated.

“You lied to everyone.””

“I was scared!””

Her voice cracked.

Everyone froze.

Chloe looked at me.

“I was scared you would leave.””

That sentence surprised me.

“Leave?””

She nodded.

“You always said you loved me like your own daughter.””

“I do.””

“Exactly.””

She cried harder.

“And I knew if you found out about Mom, you’d finally realize I wasn’t really yours.””

The words cut through me.

Because suddenly, I understood.

The wedding.

The anger.

The humiliation.

It wasn’t about me pretending to be her mother.

It was about her being afraid that I wasn’t.

I softened for one second.

Then I remembered the slap.

The public humiliation.

The way she looked at me like I was nothing.

“Chloe,” I said quietly, “you were afraid of losing me, so you destroyed me?””

She looked down.

“I didn’t mean for it to go this far.””

I looked at the woman who had raised her.

Then the woman who gave birth to her.

Two mothers.

Two different kinds of love.

And somehow, I was the one standing in the middle, bleeding.

Claire stepped forward.

“There’s more.””

I looked at her.

“More?””

She nodded.

The sadness in her eyes deepened.

“I didn’t come here because of the wedding.””

She opened the folder.

“I came because Chloe asked me to help her prove something.””

My eyebrows narrowed.

“Prove what?””

Claire looked directly at me.

“That you were never supposed to know the truth.””

The ballroom became completely silent.

Then she handed me another document.

May you like

And the first line made my hands shake.

Because it had my name on it.
