Chapter 9: The Letter Ethan Left Behind

Ethan disappeared for three days.

Three days of unanswered calls.

Three days of searching.

Three days of questions.

My father’s team searched every place they could.

Hospitals.

Hotels.

Safe houses.

Nothing.

It felt like Ethan had vanished completely.

I hated admitting it.

But I was worried.

Not because I had forgiven him.

Because despite everything, I had seen something in his eyes at the warehouse.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For me.

On the fourth morning, a package arrived at my father’s house.

No return address.

No name.

Just my name written across the front.

Claire.

My father immediately told me not to open it.

But I already knew.

It was from Ethan.

Inside was a letter.

And a small key.

I unfolded the paper.

*Claire,*

*I know you may never forgive me.*

*I don’t blame you.*

I stopped reading for a moment.

Because those were the first honest words he had ever given me.

I continued.

*The night of our wedding, when I threw that towel, I wanted you to hate me.*

*I know how terrible that sounds.*

*I know what I did was cruel.*

*But Richard was watching.*

My fingers tightened around the paper.

*He knew I was getting close to exposing him. He knew you were the person who could hurt him most.*

*He believed if you hated me, you would leave quickly and become harder to use.*

I looked at my father.

He was reading over my shoulder.

The letter continued.

*But I made one mistake.*

*I underestimated how much I would care about you.*

My eyes burned.

*The moment you removed your ring, I realized I had become the person I was trying to protect you from.*

I sat down.

The room was silent.

*I should have trusted you.*

*I should have told you the truth.*

*I should never have made you feel powerless.*

At the bottom of the letter was one final sentence.

*The key opens the place where the real evidence is hidden.*

I looked at the key.

A small metal key.

Nothing special.

Except attached to it was a tag.

A number.

My father recognized it.

“That’s a safety deposit box.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

He stared at the number.

“First National Bank.””

Then my phone rang.

Ethan.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

Silence.

Then his voice.

Weak.

Tired.

“Claire.””

I closed my eyes.

“You’re alive.””

“Yes.””

“Why did you leave?””

A long pause.

“Because Richard wasn’t the only person involved.””

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?””

His voice lowered.

“There’s someone else.””

“Who?””

I heard him breathe.

Then:

“Someone your father trusts more than anyone.””

I looked at my father.

He was already listening.

“Ethan, tell me.””

His voice became urgent.

“Don’t go to the bank.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

“Because if you open that box…”

The line crackled.

Then his voice disappeared.

“Ethan?””

Nothing.

The call ended.

And on the table beside me, the small key suddenly felt much heavier.

Because now I knew one thing.

May you like

The person behind everything was still close.

Closer than we ever imagined.
