Chapter 14: The Last Piece of the Puzzle
The next forty-eight hours changed everything.
News channels repeated Ethan’s name.
People who had never met him called him a criminal.
Online strangers judged every photograph from our wedding.
They turned my happiest day into evidence against him.
And I hated how familiar that feeling was.
Being judged without knowing the truth.
Ethan was released after questioning, but the damage was already done.
His reputation was destroyed.
His company was frozen.
His father had disappeared.
And everyone wanted an explanation.
Including me.
I found Ethan sitting alone outside my father’s house.
The same place where my life had fallen apart days earlier.
He looked up when I approached.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
I sat beside him.
“Neither should you.””
A small smile appeared.
The first real one I had seen.
“I deserve that.””
I looked at him.
“Do you?””
He stared ahead.
“I don’t know anymore.””
For the first time, Ethan looked lost.
Not like a wealthy businessman.
Not like the man who controlled every room.
Just human.
“My father betrayed me.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
“He used me.””
I looked at him.
“Like everyone used everyone.””
He didn’t respond.
Because it was true.
After a moment, he said:
“There’s something I need to show you.””
We went inside.
He opened an old laptop.
A single folder sat on the desktop.
The name:
*For Claire.*
My heart skipped.
“When did you make this?””
“Before the wedding.””
I looked at him.
“You planned for this?””
“I planned for the possibility that nobody would believe me.””
He opened the folder.
Inside were recordings.
Documents.
Videos.
The first video showed Richard.
Talking to Ethan’s father.
The audio was clear.
“I need your son married to Hayes’ daughter.””
My breath caught.
Richard continued:
“Once the marriage happens, I’ll have access.””
Ethan’s father nodded.
“And my son?””
Richard smiled.
“He’ll do what he’s told.””
The video ended.
I stared at the screen.
“So your father was involved from the beginning.””
Ethan nodded.
“My father wanted money. Richard wanted power.””
“And you?””
He looked at me.
“I wanted to stop them.””
The next file opened automatically.
It was an audio recording.
Emma’s voice.
But this time, she sounded different.
Scared.
“I made a mistake.””
Richard answered.
“You made a deal.””
Emma whispered:
“I didn’t know you would hurt her.””
Richard laughed.
“That’s the problem with people like you. You think you’re playing the game.””
I froze.
People like you.
Emma wasn’t the mastermind.
She was another piece.
Another person who thought she had control.
The final file was a video.
Richard.
Alone.
Speaking directly to the camera.
“If you’re watching this, then Ethan failed.””
He smiled.
“But he was always predictable.””
My stomach tightened.
Richard continued.
“He fell in love with the girl.””
The video stopped.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Ethan.
“You loved me?””
He looked away.
“I tried not to.””
The answer hurt.
But it was honest.
Then my father entered.
“I found something.””
We turned.
He held a document.
“The final transfer record.””
He placed it down.
“The person who funded Richard’s entire operation.””
I looked at the paper.
There was a name.
Not Richard.
Not Daniel.
Not Ethan’s father.
Someone else.
Someone none of us expected.
My father whispered:
“This person has been controlling everything from the beginning.””
I stared at the name.
And felt my entire world shift.
Because the person behind it all…
May you like
Was someone I had trusted more than anyone.
My mother.
