Chapter 5: My Sister’s Confession

Emma came to my father’s house that afternoon.

I almost didn’t let her in.

Almost.

But anger needs answers.

And betrayal needs a face.

When she stepped through the front door, she looked nothing like the confident sister who had adjusted my wedding dress hours before I walked down the aisle.

Her eyes were swollen.

Her makeup was gone.

She looked exhausted.

“Hi,” she whispered.

I didn’t respond.

My father stood behind me.

“Explain.””

Emma looked at him.

“Dad—”

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“You involved yourself in my daughter’s life without telling her the truth. You explain now.””

Emma nodded slowly.

“I know.””

She sat on the couch.

I stayed standing.

“Start talking.””

She looked at me.

“I never wanted this to happen.””

I laughed.

“You never wanted me to find out?””

“No.””

“Then what did you want?””

She looked down.

“I wanted Ethan to survive.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Emma took a deep breath.

“Ethan’s family wasn’t just struggling financially.””

She looked at my father.

“They were being investigated.””

My father’s expression changed.

“For what?””

Emma swallowed.

“Fraud.””

The word hung in the room.

I stared at her.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“I found out before the wedding.””

I felt sick.

“You let me marry him anyway?””

“I thought I could fix it.””

I stepped back.

“You thought?””

Emma wiped her face.

“Ethan convinced me he was trapped.””

“Of course he did.””

She looked at me.

“He told me his father forced him into things. He told me the company would collapse if your family didn’t help.””

My father crossed his arms.

“And you believed him.””

Emma nodded.

“I did.””

A bitter smile touched my lips.

“So you saved him.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I destroyed everything.””

That was the first honest thing she had said.

I sat down.

Not because I forgave her.

Because my legs suddenly felt weak.

“Why me?””

Emma looked confused.

“What?””

“Why did you choose me?””

She looked away.

And that silence hurt more than anything.

Finally, she said:

“Because he wanted you.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Ethan wasn’t interested in the company connection. He was interested in you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“He watched you for months before you met him.””

My stomach turned.

“He knew about you?””

Emma nodded.

“He knew your habits. Your favorite restaurants. Your work schedule.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“That’s not romantic.””

“No,” she whispered.

“It wasn’t.””

My father stepped forward.

“What else?””

Emma looked terrified.

“There’s something I haven’t told you.””

I closed my eyes.

“Of course there is.””

She reached into her bag and pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this after the wedding rehearsal.””

My father took it.

“What is it?””

Emma looked at me.

“It’s from Ethan.””

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

My photograph.

But it wasn’t a normal picture.

It was taken from a distance.

I was walking out of my office.

Another showed me sitting at a coffee shop.

Another showed me entering my apartment building.

My hands became cold.

“How long?””

Emma whispered.

“Almost a year.””

The room went silent.

My father’s face became unreadable.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

“Yes?””

He listened.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

I stood.

“What happened?””

He slowly lowered the phone.

“The police found something.””

My heart raced.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“They searched Ethan’s office.””

“And?””

My father looked at the photograph in his hand.

“They found a room.””

I swallowed.

“What kind of room?””

His voice was quiet.

“A room filled with information about you.””

I felt a chill move through me.

Photos.

Documents.

Notes.

My life.

Collected by someone who claimed to love me.

My father looked toward the window.

“Ethan wasn’t building a marriage.””

He looked back at me.

“He was building a plan.””

Then another message arrived on my phone.

A number I didn’t recognize.

I opened it.

One sentence appeared on the screen.

*You think Ethan is the enemy. You’re wrong. He was trying to protect you from me.*

And beneath the message was a name.

May you like

The name made my blood run cold.

Because it belonged to someone I trusted.
