Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Marriage
I didn’t move.
The name glowing on Ethan’s phone felt impossible.
My sister’s name.
“Emma.””
My father’s expression changed.
“What does my other daughter have to do with this?””
Ethan looked nervous for the first time.
“Ask her.””
I stared at him.
“Why would Emma be involved?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation told me more than his words could.
My father stepped forward.
“Answer her.””
Ethan lowered the phone.
“Your sister knew about the agreement.””
My heart dropped.
“What agreement?””
Patricia suddenly looked uncomfortable.
“Ethan, stop.””
I turned toward her.
“Stop what?””
Nobody spoke.
The living room that had felt so confident an hour earlier now felt like a room full of people hiding something from me.
I looked at Ethan.
“What agreement?””
He ran a hand through his hair.
“You were never supposed to find out this way.””
My father’s voice became dangerously quiet.
“Find out what?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Your father offered my family a deal.””
I felt dizzy.
“What are you talking about?””
He glanced at Patricia.
Then back at me.
“When my father’s company started struggling, your father helped him.””
My father’s face tightened.
“I helped him because he was drowning.””
Ethan nodded.
“And there were conditions.””
My fingers tightened around my suitcase handle.
“No.””
The word came out before I even knew I was saying it.
“No, Ethan. Don’t tell me you married me because of money.””
His silence answered.
The pain was different from the towel.
Different from the insults.
Those hurt because they were cruel.
This hurt because it made everything before tonight feel fake.
The flowers.
The promises.
The proposal.
All of it.
My father looked at Ethan.
“Is that what happened?””
Ethan shook his head quickly.
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then explain.””
Ethan looked at me.
“I did love you.””
I laughed once.
A broken sound.
“You loved me?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you treat me like that?””
He looked away.
And I understood.
Because he thought he had won.
He thought I was trapped.
He thought the woman he married had no power.
“You changed after the wedding,” I whispered.
Ethan didn’t answer.
Patricia did.
“Marriage reveals people.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
I picked up my suitcase.
“Marriage gives people permission to reveal themselves.””
Nobody spoke.
My father placed a hand gently on my shoulder.
“Come home.””
I nodded.
But before I stepped outside, Ethan spoke again.
“There’s more.””
I stopped.
My father looked annoyed.
“Enough.””
But Ethan shook his head.
“No. She deserves to know.””
He looked at me.
“Your sister didn’t just know about the deal.””
A cold feeling moved through my chest.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan swallowed.
“She helped arrange it.””
The world seemed to tilt.
Emma.
My little sister.
The person who held my wedding veil that morning.
The person who cried when I said my vows.
The person who told me Ethan was the perfect man.
I stared at Ethan.
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
My father immediately took out his phone.
He called someone.
“Find out what happened.””
Then he looked at me.
His expression softened.
“I’m sorry you’re hearing this tonight.””
I wanted to believe he knew nothing.
I wanted to believe everyone had betrayed me except him.
But deep down, a terrible question appeared.
Why had my father never warned me?
Why had Emma pushed Ethan so hard?
Why had everyone been so eager for this marriage?
As the SUV pulled away from the Whitmore house, I looked back through the window.
Ethan stood under the porch light.
For the first time since I met him, he looked powerless.
But I still didn’t know the truth.

Because the next morning, my father received a file that would change everything.
And inside that file was the reason my own sister wanted me married to Ethan.
