Chapter 9: The Truth Behind The Silence

Nobody answered.

Not immediately.

The question stayed in the room.

Heavy.

Painful.

Protect me from who?

Noah looked from me to Monique.

Then to Thomas.

A child shouldn't have to stand in a room full of adults and realize they were all hiding something.

I walked toward him.

"Buddy.""

He looked at me.

"I need you to go upstairs for a minute.""

His face changed.

"No.""

The word surprised me.

"Noah.""

"No.""

His voice shook.

"But everyone keeps talking about my life like I'm not there.""

I stopped.

Because he was right.

Thomas looked away.

Monique started crying.

Noah continued.

"I want to know.""

I knelt down.

"Are you sure?""

He nodded.

"I deserve to know.""

Those words hurt.

Because they were true.

I stood up.

"Okay.""

Thomas placed the envelope on the table.

"Your mother wrote this before she passed.""

Noah touched it gently.

"Why didn't anyone give it to me?""

Nobody answered.

He looked at Monique.

"Why?""

Monique wiped her face.

"Because I thought I was protecting you.""

Noah shook his head.

"You weren't.""

That sentence broke something inside her.

Thomas looked at me.

"His mother knew something was wrong.""

"What?""

"She noticed Noah was always apologizing.""

I looked at Noah.

That was exactly what he did.

Sorry for asking.

Sorry for needing.

Sorry for existing.

Thomas continued.

"She said children shouldn't have to earn love.""

Monique covered her mouth.

Then Noah opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

His hands shook.

He looked at me.

"Can you read it with me?""

I sat beside him.

Together, we unfolded the paper.

The handwriting was soft.

Careful.

"My sweet Noah,

If you are reading this, it means you are older now.

I need you to remember one thing.

None of the choices adults make are because you weren't enough.

You were always enough.""

Noah stopped.

His eyes filled.

I placed my hand on his shoulder.

He continued.

"I was afraid that people would love you only when you were easy to love.""

Nobody moved.

"I was afraid they would see your kindness as weakness.""

Noah looked up.

Then he read the final lines.

"Find the people who choose you every day. Those are your real family.""

The room was silent.

Then Thomas spoke.

"I failed him.""

Everyone looked at him.

"I left.""

He looked at Noah.

"I was young. I was scared. I made excuses.""

Noah didn't respond.

Thomas nodded.

"I don't expect you to forgive me.""

That was the first honest thing anyone had said.

Then Monique stood.

"I need to tell the truth too.""

I looked at her.

She walked toward the table.

"I wasn't the person Noah's mother feared.""

She paused.

"But I became someone who hurt him anyway.""

Noah looked at her.

She cried.

"I kept thinking I had time to fix things.""

She shook her head.

"I didn't realize every small moment was becoming a memory.""

For the first time, Monique wasn't defending herself.

She was admitting what happened.

But then Thomas reached into his bag again.

He pulled out another envelope.

"This is the part nobody knows.""

I frowned.

"What is that?""

Thomas looked at me.

"It was found with Noah's mother's belongings.""

He handed it over.

The envelope had my name written on it.

Not Thomas's.

Not Monique's.

Mine.

My hands went cold.

I looked at Noah.

Then at Monique.

"Why would she write to me?""

Nobody answered.

I opened the envelope slowly.

The first sentence made my heart stop.

"Daniel, if you are reading this, then Noah has finally found the courage to ask what everyone was too afraid to tell him.""

I kept reading.

And then I saw the name.

A name I never expected.

A name that changed the entire story.

Because Noah's mother wasn't warning me about Monique.

May you like

She was warning me about someone much closer.

Someone who had been in our family from the beginning. :::
