Chapter 4: The Name From The Past

I stared at Monique.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

The kitchen suddenly felt smaller.

"What do you mean someone has been asking questions about Noah?""

Monique looked uncomfortable.

"I don't know exactly.""

"That's not an answer.""

She looked down at the floor.

"Someone called me earlier this week.""

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

I watched her carefully.

She was lying.

Not the kind of lie people tell when they forget something.

The kind of lie people tell when they are trying to protect something.

"Monique.""

She finally looked at me.

"There are things about Noah's past that you don't know.""

My stomach tightened.

I leaned against the counter.

"I am his father. What exactly don't I know?""

She hesitated.

That hesitation hurt more than anything she could have said.

"Before you and I met...""

She stopped.

"Before we met what?""

She took a breath.

"Someone from his biological family reached out.""

The room went silent.

I felt my hands tighten.

"Noah's biological family?""

She nodded.

"You never told me.""

"I was going to.""

"When?""

She looked away.

I didn't need an answer.

Because there wasn't one.

I walked toward the living room, trying to process everything.

When Noah was three years old, his biological mother had passed away.

I had met him years later.

His father had disappeared before that.

Eventually, I became the person who stayed.

The person who packed lunches.

The person who helped with homework.

The person who sat beside him during thunderstorms.

I never cared about blood.

Noah was my son because I chose him every day.

But now I wondered what else had been hidden from me.

"Who contacted you?""

Monique followed me.

"I can't tell you.""

I turned around.

"Excuse me?""

"I promised.""

"You promised someone who disappeared instead of my son?""

Her face changed.

"Don't talk like you know everything.""

"Then tell me something.""

I stepped closer.

"Why was my son writing that he was afraid our family would fall apart if I knew the truth?""

Monique said nothing.

And that silence was becoming unbearable.

The next morning, I made Noah breakfast.

He sat at the table quietly.

I noticed he kept looking at me.

Like he was trying to figure out if I was still the same person.

"Buddy.""

He looked up.

"Yeah?""

"You know you can tell me anything, right?""

His eyes dropped.

"Even if Mom gets mad?""

My heart sank.

"Especially then.""

He nodded slowly.

After school, I decided to do something I should have done a long time ago.

I checked every important conversation I had with Monique about Noah.

Not because I wanted to spy.

Because I needed to understand.

And that's when I noticed something strange.

Every time I asked about Noah's feelings, Monique changed the subject.

Every time I asked about family activities, she mentioned Claire.

Every time Noah struggled, she said he was being sensitive.

I sat at my desk late that night, staring at old family photos.

There was one from Noah's first school event after I became his father.

He was holding my hand.

Smiling.

Then I noticed something.

In the background, Monique wasn't looking at us.

She was looking away.

I ignored that feeling.

Until my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost didn't answer.

But something told me I should.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice came through.

"Is this Daniel?""

"Yes.""

There was a pause.

"I need to talk to you about Noah.""

My body went completely still.

"Who is this?""

The woman took a shaky breath.

"My name is Rachel.""

I froze.

That name meant nothing.

Until she said the next words.

"I'm Noah's aunt.""

My hand tightened around the phone.

"I think your wife has been keeping you from knowing the truth about what happened before you became his father.""

I looked toward the hallway.

Toward Noah's bedroom.

"What truth?""

Her voice lowered.

"The reason Noah was never supposed to be alone with Monique.""

I felt a chill run through me.

"What are you talking about?""

The line went quiet.

Then Rachel said one sentence that changed everything.

May you like

"Daniel, Noah's mother didn't trust Monique.""

And then the call disconnected.
