Chapter 6: The Side She Never Told Me
I didn't go home immediately.
For the first time in years, I sat somewhere and allowed myself to think before reacting.
That was something I had never done.
I was always the fixer.
The person who rushed in.
The person who believed love meant holding everything together.
But now I wondered if I had been holding together something that was already broken.
When I arrived home, Monique was waiting in the living room.
No makeup.
No perfect smile.
She looked exhausted.
"I knew Rachel would contact you.""
I placed my keys on the table.
"Then why didn't you tell me about her?""
She sat down.
"Because I was scared.""
"Of what?""
She looked at me.
"Of losing Noah.""
I shook my head.
"You were losing him anyway.""
That hurt her.
I could see it.
But I couldn't ignore the truth anymore.
"What happened?""
She looked away.
"When Noah was younger, I made mistakes.""
"What kind of mistakes?""
She rubbed her hands together.
"I didn't understand how to connect with him.""
"That doesn't explain excluding him.""
"No.""
She looked down.
"It doesn't.""
For the first time, she admitted it.
No excuses.
No blaming.
Just silence.
"Then explain.""
She took a deep breath.
"Claire was struggling after her father left.""
I frowned.
"So you focused on her.""
"Yes.""
"And Noah?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I thought Noah was stronger.""
I stared at her.
"He was eleven.""
"I know.""
"No. You don't.""
My voice cracked.
"You saw a quiet child and decided he didn't need you.""
She looked away.
That was the hardest part.
Because she knew I was right.
Then she said something unexpected.
"There's more.""
I waited.
"Rachel doesn't know everything.""
"What does that mean?""
Monique stood up and walked to a cabinet.
She pulled out an old folder.
"I found this years ago.""
She placed it on the table.
I looked at the folder.
"What is it?""
She swallowed.
"Something Noah's mother left behind.""
My heart started racing.
"Why didn't you give this to me?""
"Because I was afraid.""
"Afraid of what?""
She whispered,
"That it would prove she was right about me.""
I opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Old documents.
And a handwritten note.
But before I could read it, Monique grabbed my hand.
"Daniel.""
I looked up.
"I need you to understand something.""
"What?""
"I never wanted to hurt Noah.""
I stared at her.
"Maybe not.""
She looked surprised.
"But you did.""
Those words hung between us.
I opened the note.
The handwriting matched the letter Rachel gave me.
The first sentence was clear.
"If someone is reading this, please understand that my biggest fear was not that Noah would be unloved.""
I continued.
"My fear was that he would be loved differently.""
I stopped.
Because those words hit harder than anything.
Loved differently.
Not abandoned.
Not hated.
Just never fully chosen.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
And my entire body went cold.
"If Monique is still in Noah's life, ask her about the night she left him alone at the hospital.""
I looked up.
"What hospital?""
Monique's face lost all color.
She whispered,
"Daniel...""
"What happened at the hospital?""
She didn't answer.
And I knew immediately.

Whatever happened that night was the secret everyone had been trying to bury.
And my son had been carrying the weight of it alone.
