Chapter 10: The Person Behind The Secret
I read the name again.
And again.
My mind refused to accept it.
The handwriting was clear.
There was no mistake.
The person Noah's mother had warned me about wasn't Monique.
It wasn't Thomas.
It was someone I trusted.
Someone who had been standing beside us all these years.
Someone who had smiled at family dinners.
Someone who had hugged Noah while knowing exactly what had happened.
I looked up slowly.
Everyone was watching me.
"What is it?""
Monique's voice trembled.
I couldn't answer immediately.
Because saying the name out loud would change everything.
Noah noticed my expression.
"Dad?""
I folded the letter carefully.
"Who knew about this?""
Thomas stepped forward.
"I didn't.""
Monique shook her head.
"Neither did I.""
I looked at the letter again.
Then I finally said it.
"Claire.""
The room froze.
Monique blinked.
"My daughter?""
I nodded.
"Your daughter.""
She immediately shook her head.
"No.""
The answer came too quickly.
"Daniel, no.""
I looked at her.
"Why are you so sure?""
"Because Claire would never—"
She stopped.
The sentence died before she finished.
Because maybe she wasn't as sure as she wanted to be.
I remembered every moment.
The way Claire reacted when Noah spoke.
The way she became uncomfortable when attention wasn't on her.
The way Monique always defended her.
I looked at Noah.
"Buddy, I need to ask you something.""
He looked nervous.
"Okay.""
"Has Claire ever said anything to you?""
He hesitated.
That hesitation broke my heart.
"Yes.""
Monique turned.
"Why didn't you tell us?""
Noah looked down.
"Because everyone always believed her.""
Silence.
"What did she say?""
He rubbed his hands together.
"She said I wasn't really part of the family.""
Monique covered her mouth.
"When?""
"A lot of times.""
I felt anger rising.
Not explosive.
Something colder.
Something heavier.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Noah looked at me.
"Because she said you would think I was trying to ruin your marriage.""
I looked at Monique.
She looked devastated.
But I couldn't ignore the truth.
A child had been afraid to speak because he believed nobody would believe him.
That was the real damage.
Not one dinner.
Not one comment.
The fear.
That was what had been built inside him.
That afternoon, I asked Claire to come home.
When she walked through the door, she immediately sensed something was different.
She looked around.
"What's going on?""
Nobody answered.
She looked at Monique.
"Mom?""
Monique was crying.
Claire frowned.
"Why are you crying?""
I placed the letter on the table.
"We need to talk.""
She looked at it.
Then at me.
"About what?""
"Noah.""
Her expression changed slightly.
"What about him?""
I watched carefully.
Not her words.
Her reaction.
"You have made him feel like he doesn't belong here.""
She laughed nervously.
"Seriously?""
"Yes.""
She crossed her arms.
"I think everyone is being dramatic.""
Noah was standing near the stairs.
He heard that.
And I saw his face fall.
I turned to Claire.
"Did you tell Noah he wasn't really family?""
She didn't answer.
"Claire.""
She sighed.
"I was joking.""
Noah looked away.
A joke.
That was always the excuse people used when they didn't want to admit they caused harm.
"Did you tell him Dad would choose me over him?""
Her face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Monique saw it too.
"No," Claire whispered.
But nobody believed her.
Then Monique spoke.
"Claire.""
Her daughter's expression softened.
"Mom?""
Monique looked heartbroken.
"Tell me the truth.""
Claire stared at her.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
"I was just upset.""
"About what?""
She looked at Noah.
"Because everything changed when he came into our lives.""
The words hurt.
But at least they were honest.
Noah stood frozen.
Claire immediately looked guilty.
"I didn't mean it like that.""
But it was already too late.
Because Noah had heard enough.
He quietly walked upstairs.
I followed him.
"Buddy.""
He shook his head.
"I'm okay.""
I stopped.
Because I knew that phrase.
I knew exactly what it meant.
"You don't have to be okay.""
He looked at me.
"I just don't understand.""
"What?""
"Why is it so easy for people to leave me out?""
I had no answer.
And that was the hardest part.
That night, after Noah fell asleep, I returned downstairs.
Monique was sitting alone.
"I failed him.""
I sat across from her.
"You made mistakes.""
She looked at me.
"Is that all?""
I thought about it.
"No.""
She nodded.
"I know.""
Then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
"What?""
She didn't answer.
She just showed me.
It was a message from Claire.
Three words.
"Don't trust him.""
I looked at Monique.
"Who is she talking about?""
Another message appeared.
This time with a photo attached.
A photo of Thomas.
May you like
And underneath it were words that made my blood run cold.
"He isn't the only one who came back.""
