Chapter 5: The Warning I Ignored
I didn't sleep.
Not because I was angry.
Because I was afraid.
Fear feels different when you become a parent.
Before Noah came into my life, I only worried about myself.
Now every possibility had his face attached to it.
The next morning, I drove Noah to school.
Usually, he would turn on music and talk about random things.
That day, he sat quietly.
Finally, he asked,
"Dad?""
"Yeah?""
"Are you and Mom getting divorced?""
My hands tightened on the steering wheel.
"Why would you ask that?""
He looked out the window.
"Because people leave.""
Those words almost made me pull over.
"Noah.""
He shrugged.
"It's okay. I'm used to it.""
I parked near the school entrance.
"No.""
He looked at me.
"You are not going to get used to people leaving you.""
His eyes became wet.
I reached over and fixed his hoodie.
"I need you to remember something.""
"What?""
"I chose you.""
He looked confused.
"What?""
"I chose you before I had to. Before anyone expected me to. I chose to be your dad.""
He looked down.
Then quietly said,
"Thank you.""
After he walked inside, I sat in the car for several minutes.
Then I called Rachel.
She answered immediately.
"I knew you'd call.""
"Tell me everything.""
There was a long pause.
"Daniel, I don't want to destroy your family.""
"My family is already hurting.""
That made her quiet.
Finally, she said,
"Before Noah's mother died, she left instructions.""
"Instructions?""
"Yes.""
"About what?""
"About Noah.""
I gripped the phone.
"What did they say?""
Rachel hesitated.
"She didn't want Monique raising him.""
I felt like the air disappeared.
"Why?""
"Because she saw things.""
"What things?""
Rachel sighed.
"Monique always wanted control.""
I looked through the windshield.
"That's not enough.""
"I know.""
Her voice became heavier.
"That's why I waited until I had proof.""
"Proof of what?""
"I have letters.""
My heart started beating faster.
"Letters from Noah's mother.""
"Why didn't you give them to me before?""
"Because I didn't know if you would believe me.""
I closed my eyes.
"I would have.""
"Would you?""
That question hurt because I didn't know.
I had spent years believing Monique.
Maybe too easily.
After work, I met Rachel at a small coffee shop.
She looked older than I expected.
Tired.
Like someone who had carried a secret for too long.
She placed an envelope on the table.
"I never opened these.""
I stared at it.
"Why give them to me now?""
"Because Noah told me something.""
"What?""
She looked directly at me.
"He said he felt invisible.""
My chest tightened.
Rachel pushed the envelope forward.
"His mother was afraid that one day he would feel the same way.""
I picked up the envelope.
My hands shook.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was delicate.
The first line made my heart stop.
"Daniel, if you are reading this, then something happened that made you question the people around Noah.""
I looked up.
"She knew my name?""
Rachel nodded.
"She knew about you.""
I read the next sentence.
"I don't know if I will be there when Noah grows up, but I need someone to protect him from people who only love him when it is convenient.""
I stopped reading.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
The dinners.
The trips.
The way Noah apologized for needing attention.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Monique.
"Where are you?""
Another message appeared.
"Rachel contacted you, didn't she?""
My blood ran cold.
I looked at Rachel.
She saw the message.
And her expression changed.
"She knows.""
I stared at my phone.
Then another message came through.
May you like
This one was only six words.
"You need to hear my side.""
