Chapter 9: The Witness In The Family

I read the name again.

Then again.

Margaret.

Vanessa’s own mother.

For years, I had thought Margaret was just a quiet woman who loved her daughter.

She was always polite.

Always calm.

Always careful with her words.

But now I wondered.

How much had she known?

I called Mark immediately.

“Daniel?””

“I know who the witness is.””

“Who?””

“Margaret.””

There was a pause.

“Vanessa’s mother?””

“Yes.””

“That could be important.””

“She knew?””

“We need to ask her.””

I drove there the next morning.

The entire way, I kept thinking about Noah.

About how many people knew pieces of the truth.

And how many people stayed silent.

Margaret opened the door.

When she saw me, she already looked afraid.

“You found out.””

I froze.

“You knew?””

She stepped aside.

“Come in.””

That was when I knew.

She had been waiting for this day.

We sat at her kitchen table.

The same place where she had once told me there were things she never shared.

Only now, I needed every answer.

“How long have you known?””

Margaret looked down.

“Since the beginning.””

My jaw tightened.

“The beginning of what?””

“Everything.””

I stood up.

“You knew Vanessa was hurting Noah?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

I stopped.

“Then what?””

“I knew she was angry.””

“That’s not an excuse.””

“I know.””

Margaret wiped her face.

“She was angry after Sarah died.””

I looked at her.

“What does Sarah have to do with this?””

“Everything.””

The room went quiet.

“Vanessa believed Sarah had ruined her life.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Margaret sighed.

“Vanessa and Sarah were close when they were younger.””

“I know.””

“But you don’t know why they stopped being friends.””

I waited.

“Michael chose Sarah.””

The words landed heavily.

“She was in love with him?””

Margaret nodded.

“She thought they would be together.””

My stomach turned.

“So when Sarah had Noah…”

“Vanessa saw him as proof she lost.””

I looked away.

That was the most terrifying part.

Not anger.

Not jealousy.

Obsession.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Margaret started crying.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Vanessa?””

She nodded.

“She told me if I exposed her, she would make sure I never saw Chloe again.””

I closed my eyes.

Another threat.

Another person controlled by fear.

“Tell me about Michael.””

Margaret looked toward the window.

“The night he disappeared, Vanessa called me.””

“What did she say?””

“She said she needed help.””

“With what?””

Margaret’s hands shook.

“She said Michael had attacked her.””

I stared.

“Did he?””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

“No.””

My heart pounded.

“What happened?””

Margaret whispered:

“She staged it.””

The room felt cold.

“She scratched herself. She broke a lamp. She made it look like he became violent.””

I sat there in silence.

“And you believed her?””

“I did at first.””

“Then?””

“She smiled.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

Margaret’s voice trembled.

“She smiled when she told me Michael would never see Noah again.””

I felt sick.

“Why are you telling me now?””

She looked at me.

“Because I saw Noah’s face in that car.””

Her voice broke.

“And I realized I had stayed quiet too long.””

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

It was Mark.

I answered.

“Daniel, you need to come to the courthouse.””

“What happened?””

His voice was urgent.

“Vanessa just filed another motion.””

“What now?””

A pause.

Then:

“She’s asking the judge to remove Noah from your custody immediately.””

I stood up.

“On what grounds?””

Mark’s answer was barely above a whisper.

“Daniel…”

“She claims Noah is afraid of you.””

My blood ran cold.

“And she has another witness.””

“Who?””

Mark hesitated.

Then he said:

“Someone who knows Noah better than anyone.””

I gripped the phone.

“Who?””

Mark answered.

“The person Vanessa brought to court is…”

“Your son’s school counselor.””
