Chapter 6: The Recording
I arrived at Mark’s office twenty minutes later.
The moment I walked in, I knew something was wrong.
There were papers everywhere.
Mark was sitting at his desk with his laptop open.
“Play it,” I said.
He looked at me.
“Daniel—”
“Play it.””
He pressed a button.
At first, there was only silence.
Then Noah’s voice.
Small.
Scared.
“I don’t want to go with Daddy.””
My entire body froze.
That was my son’s voice.
But it wasn’t the Noah I knew.
It sounded empty.
Broken.
The recording continued.
“I don’t like Daddy’s house.””
I looked at Mark.
“That’s fake.””
He nodded.
“I think so too.””
“How?””
“Listen carefully.””
The recording played again.
This time, I heard it.
A voice in the background.
A woman.
Whispering.
“Say it again.””
My blood ran cold.
Vanessa.
Mark paused the audio.
“She coached him.””
I sat down.
For a moment, I couldn’t speak.
The woman who claimed to care about family had been creating a story.
A story where Noah was the villain.
Where I was the danger.
Where she was the victim.
“What do we do?”” I asked.
Mark closed the laptop.
“First, we protect Noah.””
“How?””
“By showing the full picture.””
That evening, I returned to Emily’s house.
Noah was drawing at the kitchen table.
When he saw me, he smiled.
“Daddy.””
I sat beside him.
“Buddy, I need to ask you something.””
He looked worried.
“Did I do something wrong?””
“No.””
I took a breath.
“Did Mommy ever ask you to say things that weren’t true?””
His pencil stopped.
Slowly, he looked up.
“She said I had to.””
My heart broke.
“What did she say?””
He looked toward the doorway.
Like he was afraid Vanessa might appear.
“She said nobody would believe me unless I said what she told me.””
I gently held his hand.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because she said if I didn’t, Chloe would hate me.””
I pulled him into my arms.
For several minutes, he cried.
And I realized something.
Noah wasn’t just hurt physically.
He had been carrying fear every day.
The next morning, Mark called me.
“We found something.””
“What?””
“Vanessa’s old phone records.””
“How?””
“She backed everything up to a cloud account.””
I sat up.
“What did you find?””
There was a pause.
Then Mark said:
“Messages.””
“With who?””
“Someone connected to Michael.””
My heart started pounding.
“Who?””
Mark’s voice lowered.
“Daniel, before we do anything else…”
“What?””
“You need to prepare yourself.””
“For what?””
He took a breath.
May you like
“Because these messages suggest Vanessa didn’t just know Michael.””
“She may have been the reason he disappeared.””
