Chapter 14: The Father Who Came Back

The coffee shop was nearly empty.

I arrived early.

I wasn’t sure what I expected.

A stranger?

A liar?

A man who had abandoned his son?

But when the door opened, I knew immediately.

Michael looked older than the pictures I had seen.

Tired.

Broken.

But there was something familiar in his eyes.

The same sadness Noah carried.

He saw me.

Stopped.

Then whispered:

“Daniel.””

I stood.

“You know who I am.””

He nodded.

“I’ve known about you for years.””

That hurt.

“Then why didn’t you come?””

His face changed.

Pain.

“I tried.””

I didn’t sit.

“Everyone said you left.””

“I know.””

“Everyone said you didn’t care.””

His eyes filled.

“I never stopped caring.””

I wanted to believe him.

But after everything, trust was difficult.

“Tell me the truth.””

Michael nodded.

“I owe Noah that.””

We sat down.

For the next hour, he told me everything.

Vanessa had been obsessed with proving she could replace Sarah.

She wanted Michael.

She wanted the family Sarah had.

When Michael rejected her, she became angry.

“She told me if I didn’t give up Noah, she would ruin me.””

I looked at him.

“She threatened you?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell the police?””

Michael laughed quietly.

“Because she had already prepared the story.””

He pulled out a folder.

Inside were documents.

Reports.

Messages.

Photos.

“She made everyone believe I was unstable.””

I looked through the pages.

The same pattern.

The same lies.

“What happened after you left?””

Michael looked down.

“I didn’t leave.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“I was forced out.””

My heart raced.

“Explain.””

“She convinced people I was dangerous. I lost my job. I lost my home. Every time I tried to contact Noah, she blocked me.””

“Then why didn’t you fight?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I did.””

A pause.

“Until she showed me something.””

“What?””

“She threatened Noah.””

My chest tightened.

“What did she say?””

Michael looked away.

“She said if I kept fighting, Noah would pay the price.””

The room became silent.

“She used him.””

“Yes.””

I looked down.

All those years.

Everyone had failed Noah.

Michael.

Ethan.

Me.

But one question remained.

“Why now?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because I saw the news.””

“What news?””

“The court hearing.””

He swallowed.

“When I saw Noah standing there, I knew I couldn’t stay silent anymore.””

I looked at him.

“You sent the photo?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I needed you to know Ethan wasn’t the only person hiding the truth.””

I felt anger rise.

“Who else?””

Michael reached into his bag.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this years ago.””

“What is it?””

“A letter.””

“From who?””

He placed it on the table.

“From Vanessa.””

I opened it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

The letter was short.

But every word was terrifying.

Michael,

If I cannot have the life I deserve, nobody will.

I stopped reading.

My hands shook.

At the bottom was one sentence.

One sentence that explained everything.

Noah will learn that people leave him.

I looked at Michael.

“She wrote this?””

He nodded.

“She wanted him to believe everyone abandons him.””

My phone buzzed.

A message from Mark.

*The investigators found something important. You need to come immediately.*

I stood.

“What is it?””

Michael looked at me.

“You found out?””

I stared.

“Found out what?””

His expression changed.

“The reason Vanessa never wanted Noah to remember his father.””

I felt cold.

“Why?””

Michael’s answer was barely a whisper.

“Because Noah saw something that night.””

“What night?””

“The night I disappeared.””

I stopped.

May you like

Michael looked at me.

“He was there.””
