Chapter 5: The Truth About Noah’s First Father

I read the message five times.

Each time, it felt worse.

Ask Noah what happened the night his first father disappeared.

Vanessa wasn’t just threatening me.

She was reaching into Noah’s past.

A past I knew almost nothing about.

Because before Vanessa, before our marriage, there was another chapter of my son’s life.

His mother, Sarah, had died when Noah was three.

His biological father, Michael, had disappeared shortly after.

At least, that was the story I had always been told.

Michael left.

He didn’t want responsibility.

He moved away.

That was what Sarah’s family told me.

But now Vanessa was suggesting something else.

The next morning, I called Lauren.

She answered immediately.

“Did she contact you?””

I froze.

“How did you know?””

“Because she always does that.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Lauren, what does Vanessa know about Michael?””

Silence.

Too much silence.

“Lauren?””

Finally, she whispered:

“Daniel, I think you need to talk to Sarah’s mother.””

I drove to see Noah’s grandmother that afternoon.

Her name was Margaret.

She lived in a quiet neighborhood outside Dallas.

When she opened the door and saw me, she immediately knew something was wrong.

“Is Noah okay?””

“Yes.””

Her shoulders relaxed.

Then she saw my expression.

“What happened?””

I stepped inside.

“I need to ask you about Michael.””

Her face changed.

She slowly closed the door.

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa sent me a message.””

Margaret went pale.

“What did she say?””

I showed her the phone.

She read it.

Then she sat down.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

She looked at me.

“There are things I never told you.””

I felt my heart sink.

“What things?””

She folded her hands together.

“Michael didn’t just leave.””

I stared at her.

“What do you mean?””

“He disappeared after an argument with Sarah.””

“What kind of argument?””

Margaret looked toward the window.

“The kind that scared everyone.””

My voice lowered.

“Was Vanessa involved?””

She looked at me.

And that was the answer.

“What happened?””

Margaret took a deep breath.

“Vanessa and Sarah were friends before you met her.””

I felt cold.

“What?””

“Yes.””

I stood up.

“No. That’s impossible.””

“I wish it was.””

Margaret looked at me.

“Vanessa knew Sarah. She knew Michael. She knew Noah.””

My mind raced.

All those years.

All those coincidences.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

“Because Sarah asked us not to.””

“Why?””

Margaret’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because she was afraid.””

The room became silent.

“Afraid of what?””

Margaret looked down.

“Vanessa.””

I felt my hands go numb.

Before I could ask another question, my phone rang.

It was Mark.

I answered.

“Daniel, where are you?””

“At Margaret’s.””

There was a pause.

Then:

“You need to come back immediately.””

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa filed an emergency motion.””

My heart sank.

“For what?””

Mark’s voice became serious.

“She’s claiming you are unstable and dangerous.””

I almost laughed.

Almost.

“She’s accusing me?””

“Yes.””

I looked out the window.

The woman who locked my son in a car was now trying to make me the threat.

“What else?””

Another pause.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

“She also filed paperwork claiming Noah is not safe with you.””

My chest tightened.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you worried?””

Because Mark knew something I didn’t.

“Because Vanessa attached evidence.””

“What evidence?””

His answer was quiet.

“A recording.””

My heart stopped.

“Of what?””

A long pause.

Then he said:

“Of Noah saying he doesn’t want to live with you.””

I went completely still.

“Noah never said that.””

“I know.””

“Then where did she get it?””

Mark didn’t answer immediately.

Finally, he said:

“Daniel, we need to find out.””

I looked at Margaret.

She was already crying.

Because she knew.

Someone had been preparing this for a long time.

And somehow…

Vanessa had been waiting for this exact moment.
