Chapter 13: The Person I Never Suspected
I stared at the photo until my eyes hurt.
My brother.
Ethan.
The person who had stood beside me through every difficult moment.
The person who helped me after Sarah died.
The person who told me Michael was a coward.
The person who encouraged me to move forward.
The person who introduced me to Vanessa.
I felt like the ground had disappeared beneath me.
“Daniel?””
Mark’s voice pulled me back.
“What happened?””
I handed him my phone.
He looked at the picture.
His expression changed immediately.
“Who is that?””
“My brother.””
Mark looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
I nodded.
“Very sure.””
The message underneath the photo remained on the screen.
Ask yourself why Michael disappeared after meeting the same person in this picture.
I called Ethan.
He didn’t answer.
I called again.
Still nothing.
A strange feeling settled in my chest.
Not anger.
Not yet.
Something worse.
Betrayal.
I drove to his house.
When he opened the door, he froze.
“Daniel.””
I held up my phone.
“Explain.””
His face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Recognition.
Fear.
“You need to leave.””
My heart sank.
“You knew.””
Ethan looked away.
“Daniel…”
“You knew about Vanessa.””
Silence.
“You knew about Michael.””
Still silence.
I stepped closer.
“How long?””
He rubbed his face.
“I didn’t want this to happen.””
“That’s not an answer.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Years.””
The word hit me.
Years.
I felt sick.
“How could you?””
He looked at me.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Protect me?””
“You had just lost Sarah.””
“You lied to me.””
“I kept you from being destroyed.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You helped destroy my family.””
Ethan sat down.
“I made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
He looked toward the window.
“The night Michael disappeared, he came to me.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He came because he didn’t trust Vanessa.””
My hands clenched.
“What did he say?””
Ethan swallowed.
“He said she was trying to take Noah away from him.””
I stared at him.
“And you believed him?””
“At first.””
“Then why did you help her?””
Ethan looked ashamed.
“Because Vanessa showed me things.””
“What things?””
“She showed me messages. She showed me accusations. She made Michael look dangerous.””
The same story.
The same manipulation.
“She convinced you.””
“Yes.””
“And you convinced me.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“I thought I was saving you from more pain.””
I stepped back.
“No. You were saving yourself.””
He didn’t argue.
Because he knew.
“What happened that night?””
Ethan was quiet for a long time.
Then he said:
“Michael came to my house.””
My heart raced.
“And?””
“He told me he was going to take Noah and leave Texas.””
“Why?””
“Because he was afraid.””
I looked at him.
“What happened next?””
Ethan’s voice became lower.
“Vanessa called me.””
My stomach tightened.
“She told me Michael had attacked her.””
“But he didn’t.””
“No.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Because I saw what happened when Michael tried to fight back.””
“What?””
“She destroyed him.””
I waited.
“She called everyone. She cried. She made him look like a monster.””
Ethan looked down.
“And I was scared.””
For years, I had thought Ethan was strong.
Now I saw the truth.
He was just another person Vanessa controlled.
“Where is Michael?””
Ethan looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
He shook his head.
“I swear.””
I studied his face.
Then my phone rang.
It was Mark.
I answered.
“Daniel, we found something.””
“What?””
“We tracked the number that sent the photo.””
My heart pounded.
“Who was it?””
A pause.
Then:
“Michael.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He’s alive.””
The world went silent.
Mark continued.
“Daniel, he wants to meet you.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Where?””
Mark gave me an address.
A small coffee shop outside the city.
Then he added:
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
“He says he knows the truth about Vanessa.””
I looked at Ethan.
The brother who betrayed me.
The man who helped bury the past.
Then I looked at the address.
May you like
Because somewhere out there was the man everyone said abandoned Noah.
And he was ready to tell me what really happened.
