Chapter 6: The Secret Claire Hid
I read the message three times.
Each time, the words became heavier.
*If Ryan talks, you go down too.*
I looked at Claire.
She looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
“How long?””
She didn’t answer.
“How long have you been hiding things from me?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Marcus…”
“How long?””
She sat down.
For the first time since this nightmare began, she looked smaller than me.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“You keep saying that.””
“I thought if I handled it quietly—”
“Quietly?””
My voice echoed through the empty hallway.
“You silenced our daughter.””
She covered her face.
“I made a mistake.””
I shook my head.
“No. You made choices.””
She looked up.
And finally, she said the words I had been waiting for.
“I knew Ryan was a problem.””
The air left my lungs.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“Not everything.””
“What did you know?””
Claire looked toward Maya’s room.
“She told me she didn’t want to be around him.””
“When?””
I felt dizzy.
“I thought she misunderstood.””
“You thought?””
She started crying.
“I talked to Ryan.””
“And?””
“He said she was imagining things.””
I stared at her.
“And you believed him?””
Claire looked down.
“I wanted to.””
That answer hurt more than anything.
Because it was honest.
She didn’t believe him because she had proof.
She believed him because believing him was easier.
I walked away.
I couldn’t stand there anymore.
When I returned to Maya’s room, she was awake.
“Daddy?””
I sat beside her.
“Hey.””
“Is Mommy in trouble?””
The question broke me.
Even now.
Even after everything.
She was worried about Claire.
“She’s going to have to answer questions.””
“Because of me?””
I immediately shook my head.
“No.””
“But if I didn’t tell…”
I held her hand.
“Maya.””
She looked at me.
“Listen carefully.””
I waited until she was looking directly at me.
“Adults are responsible for their choices.””
She nodded.
“You didn’t cause this.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I was scared you wouldn’t believe me.””
I brushed her hair back.
“I’m sorry you ever thought that.””
She closed her eyes.
“I tried.””
“I know.””
“I tried to tell you.””
“I know.””
Those words would stay with me forever.
Because she had tried.
And I had missed it.
The next morning, detectives came to speak with Maya.
They were gentle.
They brought coloring books.
They let her take breaks.
They treated her like a child.
Not a problem to solve.
While Maya talked with them, I sat outside.
Claire sat across from me.
Neither of us spoke.
Finally, she whispered:
“I love her.””
I looked at her.
“I know.””
“I would never want to hurt her.””
“I know.””
“Then why does it feel like you hate me?””
I looked away.
“Because I don’t understand how someone can love their child and still choose silence.””
She cried quietly.
“I was afraid.””
I nodded.
“Fear explains things.””
She looked at me.
“But it doesn’t excuse them.””
“No.””
For once, she didn’t argue.
A detective came out.
“Mr. Bennett?””
I stood.
“Yes?””
“We found something in Maya’s backpack.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
He held up a small envelope.
Different from the one we found before.
“This was hidden behind the inside lining.””
I frowned.
“Maya didn’t mention another one.””
The detective looked at the envelope.
“She probably didn’t know it was there.””
I stared.
“Who put it there?””
He handed it to me.
My name was written on the front again.
But this time, there was something else.
A date.
A date from six months earlier.
I looked at Claire.
Her face went pale.
“Marcus…”
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
May you like
And on the back, four words were written in Maya’s handwriting.
*“Daddy, I remember.””*
