Chapter 12: The Video I Never Remembered
I stared at the photograph.
Over and over.
Trying to understand what I was seeing.
Me.
Standing in my own backyard.
Talking to Maya.
Three days before everything happened.
The detective watched my reaction.
“Do you remember this conversation?””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
I looked at the image again.
“I mean… I don’t think so.””
“You’re certain?””
I felt sick.
“No.””
Because the truth was worse.
I wasn’t certain.
I had forgotten.
The detective sat across from me.
“The video file shows you and Maya alone for approximately twelve minutes.””
“Twelve minutes?””
“Yes.””
“What were we talking about?””
“We haven’t reviewed the entire recording.””
I looked toward Maya’s room.
“Then do it.””
The detective studied me.
“Mr. Bennett, before we do that, I need to ask something.””
“What?””
“Have you ever confronted Maya about something she told you?””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“Have you ever asked her to change a story?””
“No.””
The detective nodded.
“Then watch this carefully.””
A laptop was placed on the table.
My hands felt numb.
The video started.
At first, it was exactly what I remembered.
The backyard.
The old fence.
Maya sitting at the table drawing.
Me walking outside.
Then my own voice.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
I felt strange hearing myself.
Maya looked up.
“Daddy?””
“Can I ask you something?””
The video continued.
I watched myself sit down.
I watched my daughter look nervous.
Then I heard my words.
“Maya, Mommy said you’ve been saying strange things.””
My entire body froze.
The detective looked at me.
I shook my head.
“I don’t remember saying that.””
The video continued.
Maya lowered her pencil.
“I’m not making things up.””
My recorded self sighed.
Not angrily.
But tired.
“Maya, sometimes when people are stressed, they misunderstand things.””
I covered my mouth.
I couldn’t believe it.
Because I recognized that tone.
I had heard myself use it.
The tone of a father trying to calm a child.
Except now I understood.
I wasn’t calming her.
I was teaching her to doubt herself.
The video continued.
“Did Uncle Ryan do something?””
Maya looked away.
Then my voice said:
“Your mom thinks you’re confused.””
The detective paused the video.
The silence was unbearable.
“I don’t remember this.””
The detective nodded.
“That’s common when someone is under stress.””
I stared at the frozen image.
My daughter’s face.
My voice.
My mistake.
“Continue.””
The video played.
Maya whispered:
“I don’t want him there anymore.””
My recorded self asked:
“Why?””
She opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
And I knew why.
Because she was afraid.
Even with me.
Even with her father.
The video ended shortly after.
I sat there.
Unable to speak.
The detective waited.
Finally, I whispered:
“I failed her.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t understand.””
“I do.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I was the person she trusted most.””
I looked back at the screen.
“And I still made her feel like she wasn’t believed.””
The detective leaned forward.
“Mr. Bennett, there’s something else.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“The video explains why Ryan kept the file.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew you had already spoken to Maya.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He was using this footage to build a story.””
“What story?””
“That everyone misunderstood Maya.””
My stomach turned.
“He was going to blame her.””
The detective nodded.
“But there’s one thing he didn’t know.””
“What?””
“The file was recovered with metadata.””
“What does that show?””
He looked at me.
“It shows someone accessed the video after you recorded it.””
I felt cold.
“Who?””
He turned the laptop around.
On the screen was a login record.
A name.
Claire.
I stared.
“She watched it?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Two days after the recording.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“She knew.””
The detective nodded.
“She knew what you said to Maya.””
“And she still did nothing.””
Silence.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
No one spoke at first.
Then a familiar voice.
Claire.
But she wasn’t crying.
She sounded terrified.
“Marcus.””
“Where are you?””
“Listen to me.””
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then:
“I found out why Ryan kept the video.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Why?””
Her voice dropped.
“Because the video isn’t the only thing he has.””
“What else?””
I heard her breathing.
Then she whispered:
“He has a recording of the night Maya first told me.””
I froze.
“The night she told you?””
“Yes.””
“Where is it?””
Another pause.
Then Claire said the words that changed everything.
“Marcus…”
“He didn’t record Maya.””
I felt my heart stop.
“Then who?””
May you like
Her voice shook.
“He recorded me.””
