Chapter 11: The Truth Before Ryan

The message bothered me because it was designed to do one thing.

Make me doubt.

And for a moment…

It worked.

That was the worst part.

After everything I had learned, after every lie, after every secret, one sentence from Ryan still found a way inside my head.

*Why was Maya already afraid before I ever met her?*

I hated that question.

Because it sounded like a defense.

But it also sounded like a clue.

I looked at Claire.

“Did Maya know Ryan before six months ago?””

Claire didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“Claire.””

She sat down.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

She covered her face.

“Almost a year.””

I stared at her.

“A year?””

“He started coming around more after my father got sick.””

I shook my head.

“I thought he was family.””

“He was.””

Her voice cracked.

“Until he wasn’t.””

I looked away.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t want to admit I was wrong about him.””

That answer was painfully human.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Because I could understand fear.

I could understand embarrassment.

But I couldn’t understand choosing silence when Maya needed protection.

“Ryan says he has proof.””

Claire looked at me.

“I don’t know what he means.””

“Did he ever threaten you before?””

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

“When?””

“After my mother left.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What did he threaten you with?””

She looked toward Maya’s room.

“He said if I blamed him, he would show people things.””

“What things?””

Claire shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“You’re still protecting information.””

“No.””

“Then tell me.””

She looked exhausted.

“I found messages.””

“Between you and Ryan?””

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“When?””

“After I realized something was wrong.””

“Why didn’t you show me?””

“Because they made me look guilty.””

I stared.

“What did they say?””

She looked away.

“Things that sounded like I knew.””

The answer made my skin crawl.

“Because you did know.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

That was the first time she accepted it.

No excuses.

No explanation.

Just the truth.

A detective arrived shortly after.

He asked to speak with me privately.

“Mr. Bennett, we recovered Ryan’s devices.””

“And?””

“He deleted several files.””

“Can you recover them?””

“We’re working on it.””

He paused.

“But we found something interesting.””

“What?””

“Ryan wasn’t the first person to contact Maya’s school.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“The school received a concern before the teacher contacted Claire.””

“From who?””

The detective opened his notebook.

“An anonymous email.””

My stomach tightened.

“When?””

“Six months ago.””

“Who sent it?””

“We’re still tracing it.””

I looked toward Maya’s room.

“Does it mention Ryan?””

The detective nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Because the email was sent to the school counselor, and the counselor believed the situation was being handled.””

“By who?””

The detective looked at me.

“Your wife.””

I closed my eyes.

Again.

Everything led back to Claire.

But something didn’t make sense.

If Ryan was dangerous…

Why would he expose himself?

Why would he tell Claire he had proof?

Unless…

Unless he wasn’t trying to escape.

Unless he was trying to control the story.

The detective’s phone rang.

He answered.

Then his expression changed.

“What happened?””

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“Mr. Bennett.””

I stood.

“What?””

“We found the original video file.””

My heart raced.

“But you said Ryan edited it.””

“He did.””

“Then what’s the problem?””

The detective hesitated.

“The original file has a timestamp.””

“And?””

“It was recorded three days before the incident you know about.””

I felt confused.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at me.

“It means Ryan wasn’t the first person who had a conversation with Maya.””

I felt cold.

“Who was?””

The detective opened another folder.

Inside was a printed image.

A frame from the security footage.

A person standing in our backyard.

Talking to Maya.

Before Ryan arrived.

I picked up the photo.

And my hands started shaking.

Because I knew that person.

It wasn’t Ryan.

It wasn’t Claire.

It was someone I never expected.

May you like

Someone who had spent years telling me they loved my daughter.

The person in the picture was me.
