Chapter 10: The Call I Never Returned
I called my mother before I even left the hospital.
She answered on the third ring.
“Marcus?””
Her voice immediately changed.
Mothers know.
They always know when something is wrong.
“Mom.””
A pause.
“What happened?””
I looked through the hospital window at Maya.
She was drawing quietly with a nurse beside her.
“She’s okay.””
My mother exhaled.
“Thank God.””
Then her voice lowered.
“But you wouldn’t call me like this unless something happened.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Silence.
A long silence.
“Tell you what?””
“About Maya.””
Another pause.
And then I heard something I had not heard from my mother in years.
Fear.
“Who told you?””
“Mom.””
She didn’t answer.
“Who told you?””
My voice cracked.
“Claire.””
My mother was quiet.
Then she whispered:
“She finally admitted it?””
I felt my stomach drop.
“She admitted something.””
“Marcus…”
“Mom, what happened six months ago?””
I heard her take a breath.
The kind people take before opening a door they have kept locked for too long.
“I tried to tell you.””
Claire’s words came back to me.
I sat down in the hallway chair.
“What did you try to tell me?””
“I saw something.””
“What?””
“When I visited you.””
I remembered.
Six months earlier.
My mother had stayed with us after her knee surgery.
She had seemed different when she left.
Quieter.
I thought she was upset about something unrelated.
I never asked.
“What did you see?””
Her voice trembled.
“I saw Ryan in the backyard with Maya.””
I gripped the phone.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“I did.””
“No, Mom.””
“I called you.””
My mind went blank.
“What?””
“I called you that night.””
I searched my memory.
A missed call.
A voicemail.
Something.
Then I remembered.
I had been at work late.
My phone had died.
When I charged it the next morning, there was a voicemail.
I never listened.
I told myself I would call her back.
Then life happened.
The hospital.
Work.
Dinner.
Bills.
Normal things.
Things that suddenly felt meaningless.
“You left a voicemail.””
“Yes.””
“What did you say?””
“I don’t remember every word.””
Her voice broke.
“But I told you I was worried.””
I stood.
“Did Claire know?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“She saw the call.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course she did.
Claire always knew everything happening in our house.
“What happened after?””
“My son, she came into my room.””
My mother rarely called me “my son.””
Only when she was emotional.
“She asked what I was going to tell you.””
“And?””
“I told her the truth.””
I swallowed.
“What did she say?””
My mother went quiet.
“She said if I damaged your marriage, I would regret it.””
My hands tightened.
“She threatened you?””
“She said she would make sure I became the reason our family fell apart.””
I looked toward Maya’s room.
A child.
A grandmother.
Both afraid of the same person.
“Mom, why didn’t you tell me again?””
“I tried.””
Her voice became softer.
“But Claire had already gotten to you.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“She told you I was becoming forgetful.””
I froze.
That sentence hit me harder than I expected.
Because I remembered.
Claire had said something like that.
“She’s getting older, Marcus.””
“She gets emotional.””
“She sees problems where there aren’t any.””
I had defended Claire.
I had apologized to my mother.
I had told her she was overthinking.
My own mother.
The woman who had never lied to me.
“Mom…”
“It’s okay.””
“No.””
My voice broke.
“It’s not.””
She sighed.
“You trusted your wife.””
“I ignored you.””
“You didn’t know.””
“But I should have listened.””
A long silence followed.
Then my mother asked:
“How is Maya?””
I looked at my daughter.
“She’s stronger than all of us.””
My mother cried quietly.
“I knew something was wrong.””
“I’m sorry.””
“Marcus.””
“Yeah?””
“Don’t make Maya spend years wondering if telling the truth was a mistake.””
I closed my eyes.
“I won’t.””
After the call ended, I stood there for a long time.
Then I noticed Claire watching me from across the hallway.
She knew.
She knew I had spoken to my mother.
“You talked to her.””
I looked at Claire.
“Yes.””
Her face changed.
“What did she say?””
I walked toward her.
“She said she tried to protect Maya.””
Claire looked away.
I studied her.
“How many people did you silence?””
She started crying.
“I was trying to keep my family together.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to keep your secrets together.””
She looked up.
Then her phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
Her expression changed immediately.
I noticed.
“Who is it?””
She didn’t answer.
The phone kept ringing.
Finally, she picked it up.
A man’s voice came through.
Even from where I stood, I recognized it.
Ryan.
Claire’s face went pale.
“Ryan, stop calling me.””
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“What?””
Her eyes moved toward me.
“What do you mean you have proof?””
I stepped closer.
The call ended.
“Claire.””
She looked terrified.
“Ryan says he has something.””
“What?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
The phone buzzed again.
A message appeared.
Claire read it.
Then slowly handed me the phone.
May you like
The message contained one sentence.
*“Ask Marcus why his daughter was already afraid before I ever met her.””*
