Chapter 13: The Voice She Couldn’t Hide
For a few seconds, I couldn’t understand what Claire had said.
“He recorded you?””
The silence on the phone felt endless.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
But I knew.
At least, I knew enough.
Ryan didn’t just collect secrets.
He collected control.
“Where are you?””
Claire hesitated.
“Home.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Why are you at home?””
“Because I needed something.””
“What?””
She didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
“I needed the old laptop.””
A chill moved through me.
“The one from the office?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because that’s where I think he sent the files.””
I stood up from the chair.
The detective looked at me.
“What happened?””
I covered the phone.
“Claire says Ryan has another recording.””
The detective’s expression changed immediately.
“Put her on speaker.””
I did.
“Mrs. Bennett,” he said calmly, “where exactly are you?””
Claire went quiet.
Then:
“At our house.””
“Are you alone?””
“Yes.””
“Do not touch anything.””
Her voice shook.
“Why?””
“Because if Mr. Ryan left evidence there, we need to preserve it.””
A few seconds passed.
Then Claire whispered:
“I already found something.””
My heart dropped.
“What?””
“I found a folder.””
“What was in it?””
“Videos.””
The detective looked at me.
“Mrs. Bennett, do not open them.””
“I already did.””
My eyes closed.
“Claire.””
“I had to know.””
Her breathing became uneven.
“There are recordings from different days.””
The detective spoke carefully.
“How many?””
“Seven.””
Nobody moved.
Seven.
Not one mistake.
Not one moment.
A pattern.
“Claire,” I said quietly.
“What?””
“What’s on them?””
She started crying.
“I don’t know how long he was watching us.””
The detective immediately asked:
“Are the recordings from your home?””
“Yes.””
“Do you know where the cameras were?””
“No.””
My stomach turned.
Someone had been inside our lives.
Watching.
Collecting.
Waiting.
The detective looked at me.
“We need to go there.””
I nodded.
Before leaving the hospital, I went to Maya.
She looked up from her coloring book.
“Daddy?””
“I have to go somewhere for a little while.””
Her face changed.
“Are you leaving?””
“No.””
I sat beside her.
“I’m coming back.””
She searched my face.
“Promise?””
I held up my hand.
“Promise.””
She nodded.
Then quietly said:
“Daddy?””
“Yeah?””
“I remember something else.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
She looked down.
“Uncle Ryan told Mommy he knew how to make people believe him.””
The detective standing nearby looked up.
“What did he say exactly?””
Maya thought.
“He said…”
She swallowed.
“He said, ‘People believe the first version they hear.’”
The detective wrote it down.
I looked at Maya.
“Why didn’t you tell me that before?””
“Because I thought it was just grown-up talking.””
I kissed her forehead.
“Thank you for telling me now.””
At home, the police were already waiting.
Our house looked exactly the same.
That was the strangest part.
The same couch.
The same family photos.
The same shoes by the door.
A normal home.
With an abnormal secret inside it.
Claire stood in the living room.
She looked like she hadn’t moved since I left.
The detective approached.
“Where is the laptop?””
She pointed toward the office.
Inside, the old computer sat on the desk.
The detective examined it.
“You said there were videos.””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Claire opened the folder.
Hundreds of files appeared.
Dates.
Times.
Locations.
My hands went cold.
“How long?””
Claire whispered:
“Almost a year.””
I stared at her.
A year.
A year of someone watching.
A year of secrets.
The detective opened one file.
The screen showed our kitchen.
No sound at first.
Then voices.
Mine.
Claire’s.
Maya’s.
Normal moments.
Dinner.
Homework.
Arguments.
Private conversations.
The detective closed it.
“We’ll handle this properly.””
But then Claire pointed.
“Wait.””
“What?””
She looked at one file.
“This one.””
The name was different.
Not a date.
Not a location.
Just three words.
*Marcus Doesn’t Know.*
Nobody spoke.
The detective opened it.
The video loaded.
And the first thing we heard was Ryan’s voice.
“You need to keep him away from the truth.””
Then Claire’s voice.
“I can’t keep lying forever.””
The room went silent.
The detective increased the volume.
Ryan spoke again.
“Then make sure he never asks the right questions.””
Claire whispered:
“What if Maya tells him?””
A pause.
Then Ryan said:
“Then we remind Marcus that he forgets things too.””
I froze.
The detective looked at me.
The video continued.
Ryan’s voice became clearer.
“He already doubts himself.””
Claire said:
“He loves her.””
Ryan laughed.
“Exactly.””
My hands shook.
Because suddenly I understood.
This was never just about hiding what happened.
It was about making me question myself.
Making me doubt my own memories.
Making me believe I was the problem.
Then the recording ended.
But before the screen went black, one final line appeared in the file description.
*Backup copy sent to: Claire Bennett.*
I looked at my wife.
She had known.
She had known everything.
May you like
And the worst part?
She had still stayed silent.
