Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew My Mother

Daniel walked into the house like he still belonged there.

That bothered me more than his presence.

He wasn’t nervous.

He wasn’t embarrassed.

He acted like he had every right to stand in my mother’s home.

Dad immediately stepped between them.

“Get out.””

Daniel sighed.

“Always dramatic, James.””

Dad’s jaw tightened.

“Don’t call me that.””

Vanessa looked around.

Her eyes landed on the letter in my hands.

For the first time, her confidence disappeared.

“What did you find?””

Grandma stood.

“That’s none of your business.””

Vanessa smiled.

“You always hated me, Evelyn.””

Grandma’s expression hardened.

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“I hated what you were willing to do.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Everyone is acting like Vanessa planned some grand conspiracy.””

Dad looked at him.

“You forged documents.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I helped correct an unfair situation.””

My hands clenched.

“Unfair?””

Everyone looked at me.

I stepped forward.

“You tried to take my house.””

Daniel looked at me calmly.

“Maya, you’re young. You don’t understand complicated financial matters.””

I hated that sentence.

Because adults used it whenever they wanted children to stop asking questions.

“I understand enough.””

Daniel smiled.

“You understand emotions. Not business.””

Dad moved closer.

“She understands betrayal.””

Daniel’s smile faded.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“This is exactly why I had to act.””

I looked at her.

“Because I was a child?””

“Because you were vulnerable.””

“No.””

My voice grew stronger.

“Because you thought I wouldn’t fight back.””

The room went quiet.

Vanessa stared at me.

Then she laughed.

“You sound just like your mother.””

The words froze everyone.

Dad’s expression changed.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa realized her mistake.

But it was too late.

Grandma stepped forward.

“You knew her well.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Yes.””

“How well?””

Daniel answered.

“Enough.””

Dad looked at him.

“Enough for what?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Grandma opened her bag.

She pulled out another photograph.

She placed it on the table.

This one was newer.

A year before my mother died.

Vanessa was standing beside my mother again.

But this time, they weren’t smiling.

They were arguing.

My heart raced.

“What happened?””

Grandma looked at Vanessa.

“You tell her.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

For the first time, I saw something besides anger.

Regret.

“I didn’t want it to happen.””

Dad stared at her.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I didn’t want your mother to die.””

The room went silent.

My breathing stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I made mistakes.””

Daniel interrupted.

“Vanessa.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“I’m tired of pretending.””

Dad stepped forward.

“What mistakes?””

She looked at me.

“Your mother discovered what we were doing.””

My stomach dropped.

“We?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Yes.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You need to be careful.””

But Vanessa kept going.

“She found out Daniel was moving money from the family accounts.””

Dad stared.

“What?””

Daniel shook his head.

“She’s lying.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You told me it was temporary.””

Grandma whispered:

“Oh my God.””

Dad looked between them.

“You both worked together?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Yes.””

The confession landed like a bomb.

I thought Vanessa was the monster.

But now I was seeing something worse.

She had been part of something bigger.

Dad grabbed the edge of the table.

“How much?””

Daniel looked away.

“How much money did you take?””

Nobody answered.

Then my mother’s letter slipped from my hand.

It landed open on the floor.

A sentence I hadn’t noticed before was visible.

Dad picked it up.

And read it aloud.

If Vanessa ever returns to your life, do not trust her apology.

Everyone froze.

Dad looked at Vanessa.

“She knew.””

Vanessa whispered.

“Yes.””

“What did she know?””

Vanessa looked at me.

May you like

And tears filled her eyes.

“She knew I was going to betray her.””
