Chapter 12: The Betrayal We Never Saw

The name sat there.

Written in my mother’s handwriting.

A name I never expected.

A name that changed everything.

I couldn’t speak.

Dad couldn’t either.

Finally, Grandma whispered:

“Evelyn.””

Her own name.

She was staring at her own name.

My grandmother.

My mother’s mother.

I looked at her.

“No.””

Grandma’s face went pale.

“Maya…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You?””

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

“Listen to me.””

“You were the one?””

“No.””

“Then why is your name there?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel watched quietly.

And that scared me.

Because he looked like someone enjoying a storm he had created.

Dad grabbed the note.

“What did you do?””

Grandma looked at him.

“I didn’t betray her.””

“Your name is here.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Grandma closed her eyes.

“Because your mother was afraid someone would blame me.””

The room went silent.

“What does that mean?””

Grandma sat down.

“When your mother discovered the missing money, she didn’t know who was involved.””

Dad looked at Daniel.

“And you?””

Daniel smiled.

“I was never the only one.””

My stomach dropped.

Dad turned toward him.

“What?””

Daniel walked slowly around the room.

“Your wife was smart.””

He looked at me.

“She knew Daniel was involved.””

Dad’s face hardened.

“But she also knew someone inside the family was helping him.””

Grandma whispered:

“She suspected everyone.””

Daniel nodded.

“Because that’s what fear does.””

I looked at Grandma.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She started crying.

“Because your mother made me promise.””

“To hide everything?””

“To keep you alive.””

The words made the room freeze.

Dad stared.

“Alive?””

Grandma nodded.

“Your mother received threats.””

My heart raced.

“From who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel spoke.

“From someone who wanted the trust opened.””

Dad looked at him.

“Who?””

Daniel smiled.

“You’re asking the wrong question.””

“What question should I ask?””

Daniel pointed toward me.

“You should ask why your mother created the trust in the first place.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He leaned closer.

“Your inheritance was never just money.””

Grandma looked frightened.

“Stop.””

Daniel ignored her.

“Your mother discovered something about your family.””

“What?””

He smiled.

“Something worth more than this house.””

Dad’s expression changed.

“Enough.””

Daniel laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

He pulled open a drawer.

Inside was a small metal box.

My heart started pounding.

“What is that?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Something your mother hid.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Give it to me.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Your mother wanted Maya to open it.””

I froze.

“Why?””

“Because she knew everyone else would lie.””

Daniel placed the box on the desk.

A small lock covered the front.

Grandma stared.

“I thought that was gone.””

Dad looked at her.

“You knew about this?””

She looked away.

“I knew she hid something.””

The room became too much.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone except me.

Daniel pushed the box toward me.

“There’s one thing you should know.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He smiled.

“Your mother didn’t die because of an accident.””

Dad froze.

“What did you say?””

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“She died because she was about to expose the person who betrayed her.””

I felt cold.

Dad grabbed him.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t fight.

He just looked at me.

Then he said:

“The same person who has been pretending to protect you your entire life.””

The office door suddenly opened.

A police officer stood there.

“James Carter?””

Dad turned.

“Yes?””

The officer held up a document.

“I’m sorry, but we need you to come with us.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

The officer looked uncomfortable.

“Because a new complaint was filed this morning.””

Dad stared.

“Against who?””

The officer looked down at the paper.

Then back at me.

“Against your father.””

I couldn’t breathe.

May you like

Because the person who had spent the entire time protecting me…

Was now the one everyone was accusing.
