Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Plan

The name on the paper felt impossible.

I read it again.

Then again.

Because my brain refused to accept it.

“Grandma?””

My voice barely came out.

Dad looked at me.

“Maya…”

The signature belonged to my mother’s mother.

Evelyn Carter.

My grandmother.

She had been gone from my life for years.

After my mother died, she moved across the country.

Dad always said she needed time to grieve.

But I remembered something else.

I remembered phone calls that stopped.

Letters that never came.

Birthdays where nobody from my mother’s side appeared.

I thought she forgot me.

Now I was looking at her name on a document that could have changed my entire life.

“That’s not possible,” Dad said.

The attorney nodded.

“That’s what I thought too.””

He opened another folder.

“Which is why I contacted her.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“What?””

Dad looked at her.

“You contacted Evelyn?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Yesterday.””

The room became silent.

Dad stepped forward.

“And what did she say?””

The attorney looked uncomfortable.

“She said she never signed these documents.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

The attorney placed another paper beside the first one.

“A handwriting specialist confirmed the signature was copied.””

Dad stared at Vanessa.

“So both signatures were forged.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You’re blaming me for everything.””

Dad didn’t respond.

Because she wasn’t denying the important part.

She was only denying being caught.

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She turned toward me.

“What?””

“Why would you do this?””

For once, my voice didn’t shake.

“I lived here with you.””

She looked away.

“I cooked for you.””

“You controlled everything I ate.””

Her face tightened.

“I gave you a home.””

I swallowed.

“No.””

The word surprised even me.

“You lived in my mother’s home.””

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa looked like I had slapped her.

Then she smiled.

A small, cruel smile.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The attitude.””

Dad immediately stepped forward.

“Enough.””

But Vanessa kept going.

“You think because your mother left you something, you’re better than everyone?””

My eyes filled.

“I never said that.””

“You didn’t have to.””

The attorney quietly closed his folder.

“This conversation should continue with legal representation present.””

Vanessa grabbed her purse.

“You’re all making a mistake.””

Dad watched her.

“Where are you going?””

“Somewhere I’m respected.””

She walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

Without turning around, she said:

“You think you know everything.””

Dad didn’t answer.

She looked back at me.

“But you don’t know why your mother left that trust.””

A chill went through me.

“What?””

Vanessa smiled.

“You should ask your father.””

Dad’s expression changed instantly.

Not anger.

Fear.

And that scared me more.

The door closed behind her.

I turned toward him.

“What did she mean?””

Dad looked away.

“Maya…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“What did she mean?””

He sat down slowly.

For the first time, my father looked like someone carrying a secret too heavy to hold.

“There are things about your mother’s family that I never told you.””

I waited.

“Why?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Because your mother made me promise.””

“A promise to hide things from me?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“A promise to protect you.””

I stared at him.

“Protect me from what?””

He didn’t answer.

The silence became unbearable.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“Who is it?””

Dad stood immediately.

“It’s Evelyn.””

My grandmother.

The woman whose signature had been stolen.

The woman who disappeared.

The woman who might finally explain everything.

Dad answered.

“Evelyn?””

A few seconds passed.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

I moved closer.

“What happened?””

Dad listened silently.

Then he looked at me.

“Maya…”

“What?””

His hand tightened around the phone.

“She knows who forged the documents.””

I held my breath.

“Who?””

Dad’s voice dropped.

“She said the person who did it wasn’t Vanessa.””

The room went cold.

May you like

Because if Vanessa wasn’t the person behind everything…

Then someone else had been using her.
