Chapter 11: The Office Full of Secrets

Daniel’s office looked exactly like I remembered.

Expensive.

Clean.

Perfect.

The kind of place where nobody would believe something terrible could happen.

The receptionist looked surprised when she saw Dad.

“Mr. Carter?””

Dad didn’t slow down.

“Where is Daniel?””

She stood.

“He’s in a meeting.””

“Tell him it’s urgent.””

Before she could answer, Daniel’s office door opened.

He stepped out.

And the moment he saw Vanessa behind us, his face changed.

“You brought her?””

Dad stared at him.

“You stole my daughter’s documents.””

Daniel smiled.

A small, controlled smile.

“I think emotions are making you misunderstand the situation.””

I hated how calm he was.

Like he was still in control.

Dad walked forward.

“Where are the original trust papers?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

That told me everything.

They weren’t partners anymore.

They were scared of each other.

Daniel sighed.

“You really want the truth?””

“Yes.””

He opened the office door.

“Then come inside.””

The room smelled like leather and expensive coffee.

Daniel walked to his desk.

“I didn’t want it to go this far.””

Dad laughed.

“You forged documents.””

“I made corrections.””

“You committed fraud.””

Daniel ignored him.

His eyes moved to me.

“Maya, your mother was a complicated woman.””

My expression hardened.

“Don’t talk about her like you knew her.””

He smiled.

“I knew her better than you think.””

I felt sick.

“How?””

Daniel leaned against the desk.

“Your mother trusted me.””

Dad’s face changed.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at him.

“She trusted me because I helped build the trust.””

Grandma stepped forward.

“And then you tried to destroy it.””

Daniel shrugged.

“Things change.””

Dad’s hands clenched.

“Where is the folder?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“She has it.””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“What?””

Daniel smiled.

“You thought I wouldn’t tell them?””

“You told me you would protect me.””

“I protected myself.””

The betrayal on Vanessa’s face was almost frightening.

For the first time, I saw her understand what it felt like to be used.

“You never planned to help me.””

Daniel laughed.

“Vanessa, you were never the owner of anything.””

Her face went pale.

“You said—”

“I said whatever I needed to say.””

Dad stepped between them.

“You manipulated her.””

Daniel looked amused.

“She was easy to manipulate.””

Vanessa flinched.

I expected anger.

Instead, she looked broken.

Dad noticed something on Daniel’s desk.

A small envelope.

He picked it up.

Daniel immediately moved.

“Don’t.””

That single word made everyone freeze.

Dad opened it.

Inside was a copy of my mother’s original trust agreement.

And a handwritten note.

My mother’s handwriting.

Dad read the first line.

Then he stopped.

“What?””

I moved closer.

“What does it say?””

His hands shook.

He handed me the note.

My mother’s words stared back at me.

If you are reading this, Daniel has already betrayed us.

My breath caught.

The note continued.

But he is not the only person responsible.

I looked at Dad.

Another name was written beneath.

A name that made him go completely silent.

Because it was someone I never expected.

Someone I had trusted.

Someone who had spent years telling me they loved me.

Dad whispered:

“No.””

Grandma took the paper.

May you like

Then she covered her mouth.

Because she recognized the name too.
