Chapter 4: The Witness Who Lied
Dad stared at the signature at the bottom of the document like it was something dangerous.
Not because he recognized my handwriting.
Because he recognized the person who claimed to witness it.
I stood beside him, trying to understand what I was seeing.
My name was written there.
Maya Carter.
A fake signature.
A fake approval.
A fake attempt to control my own future.
And beside it was the witness signature.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
Dad didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me.
He looked at the attorney.
“Say it.””
The attorney adjusted his glasses.
“The witness listed is Daniel Reeves.””
My stomach dropped.
I knew that name.
Daniel wasn’t a stranger.
He was Dad’s business partner.
He had been around our family for years.
He came to my birthday parties when I was younger.
He brought me gifts.
He told me my mother would be proud of me.
And now his name was on a document that could have taken everything from me.
“No,” I whispered.
Dad looked at me.
“Maya…”
“Maybe there’s a mistake.””
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
It wasn’t a happy laugh.
It was the sound of someone who thought she had found an escape.
“Exactly,” she said quickly.
“There’s obviously been some confusion.””
Dad turned toward her.
“You knew about this.””
Her smile disappeared.
“I knew Daniel was helping with paperwork.””
“What paperwork?””
She crossed her arms.
“The paperwork you ignored.””
Dad stepped closer.
“You tried to transfer my daughter’s house.””
“No,” Vanessa snapped.
“I tried to secure our family’s future.””
“Our family?””
She looked at me.
“Yes. This family.””
I almost laughed.
Because for years, she had made sure I knew I was not part of her version of family.
Dad’s attorney placed the documents on the table.
“There is something else you should see.””
He pulled out a copy of an email.
Dad read it silently.
Then his face changed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He handed it to me.
The email was from Daniel.
To Vanessa.
The subject line said:
*Final Steps Before Transfer*
My hands started shaking.
I read the first sentence.
Once Maya’s signature is verified, the trust transfer should be completed without delay.
I looked up.
“They planned this.””
Nobody spoke.
Even Vanessa didn’t deny it.
Dad’s voice became dangerously calm.
“How long?””
She looked away.
“How long have you been working with Daniel?””
Vanessa sighed.
“You’re making this bigger than it is.””
Dad slammed the paper onto the table.
“You tried to steal my daughter’s inheritance.””
“I did not steal anything!””
“Then what do you call it?””
Her eyes flashed.
“I call it taking control before an irresponsible child wastes everything.””
The words hurt more than I expected.
Even after everything.
Even after the documents.
She still looked at me like I was the problem.
Dad stepped forward.
“She is fourteen years old.””
“And she’ll be eighteen someday.””
“Yes.””
“And then what?””
Vanessa pointed toward the house.
“This house, this money, all of it will go to someone who doesn’t understand responsibility.””
I stared at her.
“I never asked for any of this.””
Her face softened for half a second.
Then it hardened again.
“That’s the problem.””
Dad looked confused.
“What?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You never saw it.””
“Saw what?””
“That I was the one holding everything together.””
The room went quiet.
For a moment, I wondered if she actually believed that.
Then the attorney interrupted.
“There’s another matter.””
Dad turned.
“What now?””
The attorney opened another file.
“The guardianship request.””
My chest tightened.
He placed the document on the table.
“This was submitted separately from the property transfer.””
Dad looked at the paper.
“Someone tried to change Maya’s legal guardian?””
“Yes.””
“Who filed it?””
The attorney hesitated.
Then he answered.
“Vanessa Carter.””
Dad closed his eyes.
I felt the room spinning.
She hadn’t just wanted my house.
She wanted control over me.
Dad looked at Vanessa.
“Why?””
For the first time, she had no immediate answer.
No excuse.
No smile.
Nothing.
The attorney picked up the final page.
“There’s one more signature involved.””
Dad frowned.
“Whose?””
The attorney looked at me.
And my blood went cold.
“Your daughter’s biological guardian approval.””
Dad froze.
“Impossible.””
The attorney slowly shook his head.
“It was approved.””
I stared at the paper.
“By who?””
May you like
The attorney turned the page.
And revealed a name neither of us expected.
