Chapter 6: My Uncle's Terrible Secret
Dad didn't invite Michael inside.
He simply stepped away from the door and said, "You have five minutes.""
Michael entered without arguing.
He set the brown envelope on the kitchen table, where the letter about the $175,000 transfer still lay open. Tyler remained seated, staring at the BMW keys as if they belonged to someone else.
Vanessa wasn't home.
She had sent Dad a message saying she was staying with a friend, but she hadn't named the friend or given an address.
Dad had replied with three words.
Do not contact Emily.
Michael noticed the message on the counter.
"She's gone?""
"For now.""
"Good.""
Dad's eyes narrowed.
"You don't get to say that as if you're the only person who has been hurt here.""
Michael lowered his gaze.
"You're right.""
That answer seemed to anger Dad more than an argument would have.
"Open the envelope.""
Michael pulled out a stack of bank statements, a photocopy of an old letter, and several pages of handwritten notes. He placed them in a neat row.
"I started investigating the family trust after I received an alert about an unusual transfer," he said.
"At first, I thought it was a mistake. Then I saw Vanessa's name.""
Dad crossed his arms.
"Why didn't you call me immediately?""
"Because I didn't know what she had told you about me. And because I had my own reason to keep quiet.""
Dad gave a bitter laugh.
"Finally. Something honest.""
Michael accepted the remark without defending himself.
He picked up the photocopy of the old letter.
"Five years ago, when Mom's health started declining, she asked me to help organize some of her property records. She was worried that money was disappearing from accounts she thought were secure.""
Dad stared at him.
"Mom never told me that.""
"She didn't want you worrying about her. She said you already had enough on your plate with Emily and everything after your wife's death.""
I looked at the letter.
My grandmother's handwriting was unmistakable, with the same careful loops she used on birthday cards.
Michael continued.
"She asked me to review the trust and make sure the education funds were protected. She wanted Emily's college money kept separate from the family inheritance.""
Dad's face softened for a moment.
"That sounds like her.""
"She was very specific. She said Emily had already lost her mother and shouldn't have to worry about whether she'd be able to afford school.""
My throat tightened.
Michael slid the letter toward me.
I read the final lines.
Whatever happens to the rest of my estate, Emily's education must remain protected. She should never have to trade her future for someone else's comfort.
I pressed my lips together.
Vanessa had known about that promise.
She had taken the money anyway.
Dad pointed at the handwritten notes.
"What did you discover?""
Michael took a breath.
"The trust's records showed that $175,000 had been transferred to a property development company. The company was registered to an associate of Vanessa's. I traced part of the money to a house.""
"The house in the photograph?"" I asked.
Michael nodded.
"Yes.""
"The one you and Vanessa were standing in front of?""
"Yes.""
Tyler lifted his head.
"Why were you buying a house with my mother?""
Michael looked at him for a long moment.
"Because I thought I was helping her secure a place for you.""
Tyler's face twisted.
"I didn't ask you to.""
"I know.""
"Did you know she was married to Daniel?""
"Not when the arrangement started. By the time I found out, I had already signed documents connected to the property. I should have ended everything and told my brother immediately.""
Dad's voice rose.
"You should have told me five years ago!""
"I know.""
"Do you have any idea what it did to this family when you disappeared? I thought you wanted nothing to do with us.""
Michael looked down at the table.
"I thought you would never forgive me.""
"You didn't give me the chance!""
The words hung in the air.
For the first time, Michael looked as if he might cry.
"I know.""
Dad turned away, breathing hard.
I understood his anger. Michael had been hiding a secret, Vanessa had been manipulating both brothers, and I was the one whose future had been placed on the table like a bargaining chip.
"Why did you transfer the $50,000?"" I asked.
Michael looked at me.
"I didn't initiate that transfer. Vanessa moved it into an account she controlled. I was listed as an authorized user because she told me she needed help keeping track of the property expenses.""
"Did you spend any of it?""
He hesitated.
"Yes.""
Dad spun around.
"What?""
Michael raised both hands.
"Not the fifty thousand from Emily's account. The $175,000 from the family trust was transferred into the property company's account. Some of that money paid for the house.
Some paid contractors and taxes. I was involved in those transactions because I believed the property was being purchased under an arrangement approved by Mom.""
"Was it?"" Dad demanded.
Michael removed another document from the envelope.
"No.""
He placed it on the table.
It was a copy of a trust amendment that named Vanessa as the temporary trustee and authorized the property transaction.
Dad studied the signature.
"That's my signature.""
"It appears on the copy," Michael said.
"But when I compared it with your older documents, I became suspicious.""
"You knew it was forged?""
"I suspected it. I didn't have proof.""
Dad's face darkened.
"And you kept quiet.""
"I was trying to get the original paperwork from the bank before accusing her. I thought if I could prove the amendment was false, I could recover the money without making the situation worse.""
"Without making the situation worse?"" Dad repeated.
"My daughter has lost her college fund!""
Michael flinched.
"I know. That's why I'm here.""
He opened the final section of the envelope and removed a small flash drive.
"I copied the property company's financial records before Vanessa could delete them. The files show where the money went after it left the trust.""
Dad took the drive but didn't insert it into his computer.
"What am I supposed to find?""
"Payments, transfers, and a series of invoices. Some of the invoices are legitimate. Others appear to have been created after the money was moved.""
"By whom?""
Michael looked toward the front door.
"Vanessa.""
Tyler pushed his chair backward.
"Why would she fake invoices?""
"Because she needed the transfers to look like business expenses.""
"How much did she take?""
Michael rubbed his forehead.
"I haven't established the final amount. The $175,000 was only the transaction I could trace first. There may be other transfers.""
Dad stared at him.
"You told me the trust was supposed to protect Emily.""
"It was.""
"And now you're telling me you helped Vanessa move money without verifying what she was doing.""
"Yes.""
Michael's honesty offered no comfort.
I sat down beside Tyler.
For the first time, we looked at each other without anger. We were both children of Vanessa's lies, even if one of us had benefited from them.
Tyler stared at the keys.
"I'll return the car.""
Dad looked at him.
"You don't need to decide that this second.""
"Yes, I do. If the dealership will take it back, I'll return it. If they won't, I'll sell it. I don't want something that was bought with Emily's future.""
I hadn't expected that.
"Thank you," I whispered.
He nodded, unable to meet my eyes.
Dad turned back to Michael.
"We're taking everything to a lawyer. The bank gets copies. If the evidence points to fraud, the authorities can investigate.""
Michael nodded.
"I expected that.""
"And you're going to tell them everything you know.""
"I will.""
Dad picked up the letter from my grandmother and folded it carefully.
Then he looked at me.
"We'll get answers, sweetheart.""
I wanted to believe him.
But as Michael gathered his remaining papers, one sheet slipped from the envelope and landed faceup on the floor.
I picked it up.
It was an invoice dated three months earlier, long before the BMW purchase. The recipient was a private financial services company, and the amount was $18,500.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
Payment received. Original documents secured as agreed.
I turned the page over.
There was a name written on the back.
Not Vanessa's.
Not Michael's.
My father's.
"Why is Dad's name on this?"" I asked.
Michael stopped gathering his papers.
Dad took the invoice from me.
He stared at it, then shook his head.
"I've never seen this.""
Michael's expression changed.
"That's what I was afraid of.""
Dad looked up sharply.
"What does that mean?""
Michael slowly sat back down.
"That company wasn't just handling property transactions. It was paid to store original documents connected to the family trust.""
"What documents?""
Michael glanced at the flash drive, then at the invoice.
"I don't know exactly. But I found a message from Vanessa telling someone that the originals had to remain hidden until after Emily turned eighteen.""
My blood ran cold.
"Why after I turned eighteen?""
Michael didn't answer.
Dad's phone began vibrating on the table.
An unknown number.
He answered cautiously.
"Daniel Carter speaking.""
A man's voice came through, calm and professional.
"Mr. Carter, my name is Richard Hale. I'm calling regarding a financial services company that has retained documents connected to your family's trust.""
Dad gripped the edge of the table.
"What documents?""
"That is precisely why I'm contacting you. We received instructions to release the original records today.""
"From whom?""
There was a pause.
Then the man said, "From your daughter, Emily Carter.""
I stared at the phone.
"I never contacted you!""
The man's voice softened.
"Miss Carter, the instructions include a copy of your identification and a signed authorization.""
Dad looked at me, horrified.
"Send us a copy immediately.""
"I can send it to your attorney once representation is confirmed.""
"Then tell me one thing," Dad demanded.
"What do these documents contain?""
The man hesitated.
"Mr. Carter, I believe you should know that the original records concern a trust established in your daughter's name before she was born.""
I felt the room tilt.
Before I was born?
Dad whispered, "That's impossible.""
The man continued.
"The records also include a sealed statement from your late wife.""
My breath caught.
"My mother?""
"Yes, Miss Carter. According to the file, she requested that the statement remain confidential until your eighteenth birthday.""
Dad stared at me.
I couldn't speak.
Then Richard Hale delivered the final blow.
"Your mother left specific instructions that the statement be released only if someone attempted to access or transfer the money in your trust without your consent.""
He paused.
"Someone requested the file eleven days ago.""
Dad looked at the invoice on the table.
"Who?""
The answer came quietly.
"Vanessa Reynolds.""
And suddenly, I understood why my stepmother had begged Dad not to call the bank.
May you like
She hadn't been afraid of losing the money.
She had been afraid of what my mother had left behind.
