Chapter 3: The Money Was Never Hers
For several seconds, the only sound in the garage was the faint buzz of the fluorescent light overhead.
Dad held the phone against his ear.
"What did you say?""
On the other end, Uncle Michael exhaled shakily.
"You heard me, Daniel.""
Dad looked down at the documents scattered across the workbench.
"Our mother's account?""
"Yes.""
"That account was closed after the estate was settled.""
"No, it wasn't. Not the way you think.""
Vanessa took a step toward the phone.
"Michael, don't.""
Dad turned so sharply that she stopped.
"You've had plenty of opportunities to tell the truth. You're done deciding who gets to speak.""
Michael continued.
"Mom left money in a family trust. It was supposed to be divided between you and me after certain expenses were settled. I found out last month that someone had been moving money out of it.""
Dad's face had gone pale.
"How much?""
"I don't know the final total. I was trying to get the bank records when Vanessa contacted me.""
"Why would she contact you?""
A long silence followed.
Then Michael said, "Because she knew I could prove where the money went.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"He's lying. He's trying to destroy our marriage.""
Dad held up one hand without looking at her.
"Michael, I want the truth. All of it.""
"I'll tell you everything, but you need to understand something first. The $50,000 Emily lost wasn't supposed to be mine. Vanessa transferred it into an account we both could access because she said she needed temporary protection from a financial problem.""
"What financial problem?""
"I'll explain when I get there.""
Dad's voice turned cold.
"No. You're going to explain now.""
Michael hesitated.
"Vanessa told me she had borrowed against the trust to cover debts. She said she would replace the money before anyone noticed. I believed her at first.""
"You believed her?""
"I know how that sounds.""
"You haven't spoken to me in five years, and now you expect me to believe you were helping my wife with secret accounts?""
"I didn't know she was your wife when she first contacted me.""
Dad stared at him.
"What?""
Tyler looked between the phone and his mother.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Michael continued.
"She contacted me using her maiden name. She said she needed help sorting out an old financial matter. I didn't realize how serious it was until I saw your daughter's name on the documents.""
I felt as if the floor had shifted beneath my feet.
"Uncle Michael," I said, moving closer to the phone.
"Why would my name be on those documents?""
His voice softened.
"Emily, I'm sorry. I should have contacted you as soon as I found out.""
"Found out what?""
He didn't answer immediately.
Dad picked up the birth certificate again.
"Start with Tyler. Is he your son?""
Vanessa's crying stopped.
Tyler stood motionless, his face drained of color.
Michael spoke quietly.
"Yes.""
Tyler shook his head.
"No. No, that's not possible.""
Vanessa rushed toward him.
"Tyler, sweetheart—"
"Don't touch me!""
She stopped with her hand extended.
Tyler backed into a shelf, knocking a plastic container to the floor.
"You told me my father died before I was born.""
Vanessa's face crumpled.
"I was trying to protect you.""
"From what? Knowing who my father is?""
"You were a baby. I didn't know what else to do.""
Tyler laughed, but it sounded more like a sob.
"You let me call another man Dad for twenty years.""
Dad looked away, and for a moment I saw something besides anger in his face.
He looked wounded.
Not because Tyler wasn't his biological son, but because his own brother had been part of a secret that had followed him into his marriage.
"Michael," Dad said, "you knew Tyler was your son and let me raise him without telling me?""
"I didn't know Vanessa had married you until much later.""
"And when you found out?""
"I was furious. We fought. I told you I couldn't keep pretending everything was normal, and you accused me of trying to interfere with your marriage. I left because I thought that was what you wanted.""
Dad rubbed a hand across his face.
"I thought you were angry because I wouldn't lend you money.""
"I was angry about more than money.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"This is exactly why I didn't tell you. You two always turn everything into a fight.""
Dad turned on her.
"No. You turned my family into a lie.""
She flinched.
I had never heard Dad speak to anyone that way.
He was usually patient, the man who fixed broken appliances instead of replacing them and apologized to waiters when other people were rude.
But now he looked at the woman who had stolen my college fund and concealed a second family history beneath a tarp in his own garage.
"Where is the rest of the money?"" he demanded.
Vanessa pressed her hands together.
"I was going to put it back.""
"From where?""
"I had an investment.""
"What investment?""
She looked toward the floor.
Dad lifted the signed agreement.
"Is this what the fifty thousand was for? Paying Michael to keep quiet?""
"No!"" Vanessa cried.
"It wasn't like that.""
Michael's voice cut through the speaker.
"Then tell him what it was for, Vanessa.""
She stared at the phone.
"Michael, please.""
"Tell him.""
Vanessa's shoulders began to shake.
"I needed the money because someone was threatening to expose everything.""
Dad's expression changed.
"Expose what?""
She wiped her cheeks.
"There were debts. Investments that went wrong. I thought I could fix them before anyone found out.""
"How much do you owe?""
"I don't know exactly.""
Dad stared at her in disbelief.
"You stole ninety thousand dollars from an eighteen-year-old girl, and you don't know how much money you're missing?""
"I didn't steal it!""
"Then why did you beg me not to call the bank?""
She had no answer.
I stepped forward, my voice trembling.
"You told me my mother's money was your contribution to the family.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"I was under pressure, Emily.""
"So was I. I worked for six years. I saved every dollar because I thought I could become a nurse without asking anyone for help.""
"I know.""
"No, you don't.""
I pulled my phone from Dad's hand and opened the email from my nursing school.
The tuition deposit deadline was three weeks away. I had planned to pay it that morning.
Now the money was gone.
"I might lose my place because of you.""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
"I'll make it right.""
"How?""
She looked at Dad.
He didn't answer for her.
For the first time, she was standing alone with the consequences of her choices.
Then Michael spoke again.
"Daniel, there's something else you need to know.""
Dad closed his eyes briefly.
"What now?""
"The money from your daughter's trust was transferred into an account Vanessa opened months ago. But it wasn't the first account she opened.""
My stomach tightened.
Michael continued.
"There's another account connected to your mother's trust, and the last statement I saw showed a withdrawal for $120,000.""
Dad grabbed the workbench to steady himself.
"One hundred and twenty thousand?""
"Yes.""
"Who authorized it?""
Michael paused.
"I found a signature on the paperwork.""
Dad's voice became barely audible.
"Whose signature?""
Michael answered.
"Yours.""
Dad stared at him.
"That's impossible. I never signed anything.""
"I know. That's why I called you.""
Vanessa suddenly rushed toward the phone.
"Michael, hang up!""
Dad caught her wrist—not roughly, but firmly enough to stop her from reaching it.
"How did someone forge my signature?""
Vanessa twisted free.
"You don't understand what happened!""
"Then explain it!""
She looked at the birth certificate, the bank statements, and the signed agreement lying across the workbench.
Then she looked at me.
Something in her expression made my skin crawl.
"You want the truth?"" she whispered.
"Fine. But if I tell you what happened to that $120,000, you need to understand that I wasn't the only person who benefited.""
Dad stared at her.
"Who else benefited?""
Vanessa swallowed.
Then she pointed directly at me.
"Your daughter did.""
My mouth fell open.
"What?""
Dad stepped between us.
"Don't you dare.""
Vanessa's voice grew louder, desperate now.
"I'm telling you the truth! That money was transferred into an account established for Emily years ago. Ask the bank.
Ask Michael. Ask anyone you want.""
I shook my head.
"I've never had another account.""
"Maybe you don't know about it.""
Dad reached for the documents, searching frantically through the papers until he found a folded page with a bank logo at the top.
His eyes moved to the account holder's name.
Then he looked at me.
"Emily," he said slowly, "this document says there's another trust account in your name.""
My heart pounded.
"How much is in it?""
Dad turned the page over.
His face went completely white.
Because the account wasn't empty.
It held $120,000.
And the beneficiary designation had been changed just eleven days earlier.
Dad read the new beneficiary's name aloud.
"Tyler Reynolds.""
Tyler stared at him.
Vanessa began to cry again.
And from the phone on the workbench, Uncle Michael whispered, "Daniel, don't let her touch that document. Because if the signature is what I think it is, your wife hasn't just stolen from Emily.""
May you like
He paused.
"She's made your daughter legally responsible for something she never agreed to.""
