Chapter 4: The Signature That Could Destroy Me

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Then Dad snatched the document off the workbench and held it beneath the fluorescent light.

"Legally responsible for what?"" he demanded.

Uncle Michael's voice crackled through the speaker.

"I don't know the full extent yet. But that account wasn't created to give Emily money. It was created to hold money in trust. If someone changed the beneficiary and attached fraudulent documents, she could be implicated in transactions she never authorized.""

I stared at the paper.

My name appeared at the top, followed by an account number I had never seen before. Beneath it was a signature that looked almost exactly like mine.

Almost.

"I didn't sign this," I whispered.

Dad immediately turned toward me.

"I believe you.""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks and let out a shaky breath.

"Oh, Daniel, please. Don't make this worse than it is. Emily signed so many documents when we were organizing her college finances. She probably forgot.""

I looked at her in disbelief.

"What documents?""

"Bank forms. Insurance papers. All those boring things.""

"I've never signed anything transferring money to Tyler!""

"Maybe you don't remember.""

"Stop saying that!""

My voice echoed through the garage.

Vanessa flinched, but only for a moment. Then she straightened her expensive cardigan and adopted the patient expression she used whenever she wanted Dad to think I was being unreasonable.

"Emily, sweetheart, you're upset. You're eighteen. You don't understand how complicated family finances can be.""

Dad slapped the document against the workbench.

"She's eighteen, Vanessa. Not stupid.""

"I never said she was.""

"You just told her she signed a document she says she's never seen.""

Vanessa's eyes filled again.

"I was trying to protect everyone.""

"From what?""

She opened her mouth, then closed it.

Michael interrupted.

"Daniel, listen. Don't let her talk you into handling this privately. You need copies of every document and a lawyer who has nothing to do with Vanessa.""

Vanessa lunged toward the phone.

"You have no right to interfere!""

Michael's voice hardened.

"I have every right when you use my name to hide stolen money.""

Dad raised a hand.

"Enough. Michael, can you send me whatever records you have?""

"I can send the statements and the transfer confirmations. I'll also give you the name of the bank officer who flagged the account.""

"Flagged it for what?""

"An unusual transfer pattern. Someone moved money out of the family trust, into Vanessa's personal account, and then into the account connected to Emily. After that, the beneficiary was changed.""

I felt sick.

"So the $120,000 isn't really mine?""

"Not necessarily," Michael replied.

"A name on a document doesn't prove ownership. The bank needs to establish where the money originated, who authorized each transfer, and whether the paperwork is legitimate.""

Dad stared at Vanessa.

"How long have you been doing this?""

She shook her head.

"You're twisting everything. I didn't steal anything from the family trust.""

"Then why is your name on the receiving account?""

"Because I was managing it!""

"Who gave you permission?""

Silence.

Dad took out his phone and photographed every page.

Vanessa watched him, her breathing growing faster.

"Daniel, please. If you send those documents to a lawyer, you'll destroy our family.""

He didn't look up.

"You destroyed something when you decided our daughter's future was yours to spend.""

"Tyler needed that car!""

Tyler, who had barely spoken since discovering the truth about his biological father, suddenly looked up.

"Stop using me as an excuse.""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"Tyler, don't start.""

"You told me that money was yours. You said Grandma left it to you.""

"I was going to replace it.""

"With what? The other hundred and twenty thousand you apparently stole?""

Her mouth fell open.

Dad moved toward Tyler, but the younger man stepped away.

"Don't," Tyler said.

"I don't need you to defend me.""

Dad stopped.

"I'm not defending you. I'm trying to understand what happened.""

Tyler looked toward the garage door, where his new BMW was visible through the narrow window.

"I told my friends Mom had finally made something of herself. I posted pictures. I told everyone I was done driving that Honda because I deserved better.""

He swallowed hard.

"I didn't ask where the money came from because I wanted it to be true.""

Vanessa reached for his hand.

He pulled away.

"You lied to me about my father, and you lied about the car. What else have you lied about?""

She began crying harder.

But this time, Tyler didn't comfort her.

Dad placed the suspicious document inside a folder.

"Emily, we're going to the bank tomorrow morning. We'll request a full accounting of the transactions and report the unauthorized transfers.""

Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.

"Please don't report anything yet.""

Dad looked down at her hand.

"Why?""

"Because if the bank investigates, they'll freeze everything.""

"Everything that belongs to you?""

She didn't answer.

Dad gently removed her hand.

"Then you should have thought about that before taking money that wasn't yours.""

We left the garage together, but the atmosphere inside the house had changed. Every family photograph on the walls suddenly seemed staged. Every pleasant memory carried a question mark.

I went upstairs to my bedroom and sat on the edge of my bed.

My nursing school acceptance letter lay on my desk beside a list of supplies I had planned to buy. I had already purchased two pairs of white shoes and a stethoscope with money from my summer job.

I picked up the stethoscope.

My mother had promised that one day I would wear it proudly.

Now I didn't know if I could afford tuition.

A knock sounded at my door.

"Emily?"" Dad called.

"Come in.""

He entered carrying two mugs of tea. He set one beside me and sat on the floor, his back against the wall.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then he said, "Your mother would be furious with me.""

I shook my head.

"She wouldn't blame you for what Vanessa did.""

"I should have protected that account better.""

"You trusted your wife.""

"I trusted the wrong person.""

He looked at me, and his eyes were wet.

"I'm going to get your money back, sweetheart. I can't promise it'll be easy, and I can't promise it'll happen overnight. But I won't let you face this alone.""

I leaned against his shoulder.

For the first time that day, I let myself cry.

Then Dad's phone vibrated.

A message from Michael appeared on the screen.

I found the original trust agreement. The $120,000 was never supposed to go to Tyler.

Another message followed.

And Daniel, there's a clause in the agreement that explains why Vanessa is so desperate to stop you from calling the bank.

Dad opened the attachment.

His expression changed as he read the first paragraph.

"What is it?"" I asked.

He handed me the phone.

At the bottom of the page was a provision stating that anyone who knowingly misappropriated funds from the trust would lose all rights to the remaining inheritance.

But that wasn't the part that made my hands shake.

The next sentence said the trustee could be held personally liable for every unauthorized dollar.

And beside the trustee's name was Vanessa's signature.

Dad stared at the screen.

"She's not just been stealing the money," he whispered.

"She's been trying to hide the fact that she's legally responsible for every cent.""

May you like

Then he looked at me.

"Unless she has someone else lined up to take the blame.""
