Chapter 2: The Account She Couldn't Explain
Vanessa had always been good at crying.
She could produce tears during a sad commercial, at a neighbor's funeral, or whenever Dad questioned a purchase she didn't want to explain.
But that afternoon, when he asked about the missing $50,000, her tears came with something else.
Fear.
"I moved it somewhere safe," she said.
Dad stood beside the kitchen island, holding my phone so tightly his knuckles had turned white.
"Somewhere safe where, Vanessa?""
She reached for his arm.
"Daniel, please. Can we discuss this privately?""
"No. You took money from our daughter's education account. We will discuss it right here.""
Tyler stood near the refrigerator, staring at the floor. Outside, the BMW gleamed in the afternoon sun, as if it had nothing to do with the disaster unfolding inside our house.
Vanessa dabbed her eyes with a tissue.
"You're making this sound criminal. I was protecting the family.""
"By emptying Emily's account?""
"I intended to replace it!""
"With what?""
She didn't answer.
Dad picked up his phone.
"I'm calling the bank.""
Vanessa lunged forward.
"Daniel, don't!""
Her voice cracked so sharply that Tyler jerked his head up.
Dad froze with his thumb above the screen.
"What did you just say?""
She pressed a hand to her chest.
"Please. Let me explain before you make a terrible mistake.""
"You've had a week to explain. Emily discovered the theft by accident.""
"It wasn't theft!""
"Then you won't mind me calling the bank.""
Vanessa's eyes darted toward the hallway, then toward Tyler.
For one strange second, I thought she might run.
Instead, she lowered herself into a chair.
"Fine," she whispered.
"Call them.""
Dad dialed the number printed on the bank's official website. He put the call on speaker and explained that he was helping his daughter investigate unauthorized transactions.
The representative asked to speak with me.
I answered her security questions, then confirmed my identity. My hands trembled so badly that Dad placed his palm over mine.
"You can take your time, sweetheart," he said.
After a few minutes, the representative returned.
"Ms. Emily Carter, I can confirm that a $40,000 payment was made to the BMW dealership and that a separate $50,000 transfer was completed seven days ago.""
Dad leaned toward the phone.
"Where was the second transfer sent?""
"The receiving account is registered under Vanessa Reynolds.""
Dad looked at his wife.
"Reynolds? Your maiden name?""
Vanessa pressed the tissue to her mouth.
The representative continued.
"The account has an additional authorized user. Would you like me to provide the name associated with that authorization?""
"Yes," Dad said.
"Immediately.""
There was a brief pause.
"Michael Reynolds.""
Dad stopped breathing for a moment.
Then he sat down.
"No.""
I looked at him.
"Dad?""
He stared at the kitchen wall as though it had suddenly opened into another room.
"Michael is my brother.""
I remembered Uncle Michael only vaguely. He had been a frequent visitor when I was younger, always bringing candy and making jokes that made Mom roll her eyes. Five years earlier, he and Dad had had a terrible argument. Michael left, and neither of them spoke about him afterward.
I had assumed it was about money.
Dad had once told me, "Sometimes people show you who they are, and you have to believe them.""
Now he was looking at the woman he had married, realizing that his brother's name was connected to my stolen college fund.
"Why would my brother be an authorized user on your account?"" he asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
"I can explain.""
"Then explain.""
"It's complicated.""
"Try me.""
She gripped the edge of the table.
"Michael helped me with some personal finances. That's all.""
Dad gave a short, disbelieving laugh.
"Fifty thousand dollars of my daughter's money is sitting in an account connected to my estranged brother, and you expect me to believe this is about personal finances?""
Tyler suddenly lifted his head.
"Mom, you told me the BMW came from your inheritance.""
Vanessa turned toward him.
"Tyler, stay out of this.""
"You said Grandma left you money.""
"Enough!""
Tyler stepped back, but he wasn't finished.
"And you said Michael was only helping you with the house.""
Dad's expression hardened.
"What house?""
Tyler's eyes widened.
Vanessa stood so quickly that her chair scraped across the tile.
"Daniel, this conversation is over.""
"No, it isn't.""
She snatched her handbag from the counter.
"I'm going for a drive. Everyone needs to calm down.""
Dad moved between her and the front door.
"You aren't leaving until you tell me why my daughter's money went to Michael.""
Vanessa stared at him.
"You can't keep me here.""
"I'm not keeping you anywhere. I'm asking you a question.""
"Then ask your daughter why she thinks she's entitled to every dollar in this family!""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
Dad stepped closer to Vanessa.
"Don't you dare turn this around on her.""
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Tyler spoke again, quieter this time.
"Mom, is Michael the man who comes here when Daniel travels?""
Vanessa's handbag slipped from her shoulder.
Dad slowly turned toward Tyler.
"What man?""
Tyler swallowed.
"The man who helped Mom move those boxes into the garage last month. She told me not to mention him because you two weren't getting along.""
Dad's jaw tightened.
"What boxes?""
Vanessa shook her head violently.
"Tyler, shut your mouth!""
But Tyler was staring at his mother now, and something in his expression had changed.
"You told me he was family.""
"He is family!""
"Then why are you acting like he's a secret?""
Dad reached into the drawer beside the refrigerator and pulled out the garage keys.
"Show me.""
Vanessa moved toward him.
"Daniel, please. Don't go out there.""
He stopped.
That was the moment he understood.
Whatever was hidden in the garage mattered more to her than the $90,000 she had taken from me.
Dad walked toward the back door.
I followed, with Tyler behind me.
Vanessa remained in the kitchen, whispering his name over and over.
When Dad unlocked the garage, the smell of gasoline and damp cardboard drifted into the afternoon air. Old furniture stood against the walls, and a blue tarp covered a stack of boxes in the far corner.
He pulled the tarp away.
Three cardboard boxes sat underneath it.
The first contained bank statements.
The second contained property documents.
The third contained photographs.
Dad picked up the top photograph and stared at it.
It showed Vanessa standing beside Michael in front of a small white house. Both of them were smiling.
Between them stood a little boy.
Tyler.
On the back, someone had written a date from seven years earlier.
Dad turned the photograph over again, studying Tyler's face.
Then he found a document clipped to it.
His eyes moved across the page.
His hand began to shake.
"Vanessa," he whispered, though she was still standing several feet behind us.
"Why does this birth certificate list Michael as Tyler's father?""
Tyler stumbled backward.
"What?""
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Dad pulled another sheet from the folder.
It was a signed agreement promising Michael $50,000 in exchange for keeping a family secret.
Dad looked up at his wife.
"What secret was worth stealing my daughter's entire future?""
Vanessa began to cry.
But before she could answer, Dad's phone rang.
The screen displayed a name none of us had seen in five years.
MICHAEL REYNOLDS.
Dad answered without taking his eyes off Vanessa.
"Michael?""
His brother's voice came through the speaker, low and urgent.
"Daniel, listen to me. If Vanessa has already taken the money, you need to check whether Emily's college trust is the only account she emptied.""
Dad went completely still.
May you like
Then Michael added five words that changed everything.
"Because your mother's account is missing, too.""
