Chapter 2: The Camera Saw Everything

The kitchen became so quiet that I could hear the refrigerator humming.

Noah held the tablet with both hands while Dad leaned closer.

The recording showed the kitchen from a high angle. The time appeared in the corner.

7:14 p.m.

I was standing near the counter, scrolling through my phone. My school bag was beside me. A glass of water sat near the sink.

Nothing unusual.

Then Kayla walked into the frame.

She was holding a small pink makeup bag.

My father frowned.

“That's when it happened?””

Noah nodded.

“Keep watching.””

On the screen, Kayla placed the makeup bag on the counter. She glanced toward the refrigerator camera.

Then she glanced at the hallway.

She waited.

I looked up from my phone, said something the camera couldn't quite capture, and returned to reading.

Kayla picked up the glass.

For one second, she held it over the edge of the counter.

Then she deliberately knocked it to the floor.

It shattered.

I jumped backward.

My father leaned closer.

“What is she doing?””

Noah didn't answer.

The recording continued.

Kayla grabbed her own arm, struck her shoulder against the counter, and threw herself onto the floor.

Then she began screaming.

“Mom! Help me! Emily attacked me!””

My father stopped breathing for a moment.

On the tablet, I stood frozen, staring at her.

I didn't even move toward her.

The real-life Kayla folded her arms.

“It's not what it looks like.””

My father slowly turned toward her.

“Then explain it.””

“She was being mean to me before that.””

“That's what you're calling an explanation?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Michael, she's sixteen. Teenagers do stupid things. We don't need to destroy her life over one mistake.””

I looked at her.

“One mistake?””

She ignored me.

My father replayed the recording.

Then he looked at me.

“You never touched her?””

I shook my head.

“No, Dad. I told you.””

His eyes dropped to the red mark on my cheek.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“You slapped Emily before checking whether any of this was true.””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“I was protecting my child.””

“She's my child, too.””

The words came out quietly, but they made my eyes sting.

I hadn't heard him defend me like that in a long time.

Kayla suddenly stepped toward the tablet.

“Can we stop watching this? It's embarrassing.””

Noah pulled it closer to his chest.

“There's more.””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“Noah, you've made your point.””

“No,” he said.

“I haven't.””

He tapped the screen and dragged the recording backward.

“This part happened before Emily came into the kitchen.””

The video showed Kayla entering the room again, several minutes earlier.

She was speaking on her phone.

The microphone picked up her voice.

“Mom, are you sure Dad will send Emily away if I do this?””

I felt my stomach drop.

My father looked at Vanessa.

On the recording, Vanessa's voice came through the phone speaker.

“He will if he sees you crying. Michael can't stand the thought of you being hurt.””

Kayla laughed softly.

“What if Emily tells him I did it on purpose?””

“Then make sure she looks like the angry one. Don't let her explain.””

Kayla glanced toward the refrigerator camera again.

“Are you sure the camera doesn't record sound?””

Vanessa's voice became quieter.

“Your father barely remembers he installed it. He'll never check.””

The recording ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Dad put the tablet down.

“Vanessa.””

She gave a nervous little laugh.

“Michael, it's taken out of context.””

“Out of context?””

“She was upset. She wanted attention. You know how teenagers talk.””

Kayla began crying again, but this time her mother didn't immediately comfort her.

My father looked directly at his stepdaughter.

“Did your mother tell you to do this?””

Kayla stared at the floor.

“No.””

“Look at me.””

She raised her eyes.

“Did she?””

Kayla's lips trembled.

“I just wanted Emily to leave.””

The confession landed harder than the recording.

“Why?”” I asked.

She glared at me.

“Because everything is always about you!””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“You get to be Dad's real daughter. You get all the pictures of your mother. You get to talk about her whenever you want. Mom says I have to live in the shadow of someone who isn't even here!””

Vanessa grabbed her arm.

“Kayla. Stop talking.””

But Kayla continued.

“You don't even know how lucky you are!””

I looked at the girl who had spent six years making my life miserable.

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I asked one question.

“Was that worth getting me thrown out of my own home?””

She didn't answer.

Dad picked up the tablet.

“That's enough. Nobody is leaving this house tonight until I understand everything.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“You can't seriously think I'm some kind of criminal because of a teenager's recording.””

“Then explain why you planned it with her.””

“I've spent years trying to keep this family together!””

My father looked at her.

“By making my daughter feel unwelcome?””

Vanessa took a step backward.

“You're overreacting.””

Then Noah spoke again.

“Dad, there's one more recording.””

We all turned toward him.

He wasn't looking at Kayla this time.

He was staring at his tablet.

“From last night,” he whispered.

Dad frowned.

“What happened last night?””

Noah glanced at me.

“I didn't want to tell you before because I wasn't sure what I saw.””

Vanessa suddenly reached for the tablet again.

“Michael, make him stop. This is ridiculous.””

Dad moved between her and Noah.

“Play it.””

The screen changed.

The timestamp read 11:38 p.m.

My bedroom appeared.

I was asleep beneath my blanket. The room was dark except for the faint light from the hallway.

A few seconds later, the door opened.

Vanessa walked inside.

She was holding my late mother's wooden jewelry box.

My mouth went dry.

“That's Mom's,” I whispered.

The box had been missing for three months.

Vanessa approached my desk and carefully set it down.

Then she opened it.

Inside were the earrings, photographs, and little things my mother had collected before she died.

Vanessa moved them aside.

From beneath a velvet lining, she removed a sealed envelope.

She looked toward my bed.

Then she whispered into the darkness.

“Once Emily is gone, she'll never find out what her mother left her.””

My father made a strange sound.

He grabbed the edge of the counter.

Noah paused the recording and zoomed in on the envelope.

There was handwriting across the front.

My father's name.

May you like

And beneath it, in my mother's familiar handwriting, were four words:

*YOUR DAUGHTER MUST KNOW.*
