Chapter 14: The Truth Nobody Wanted Me to Discover
We sat inside Daniel's office while Eleanor explained.
She held the silver key between her fingers.
“Jonathan died in a car accident,” she began.
“He was driving home from a meeting when another vehicle crossed into his lane.””
I looked at her.
“Was it an accident?””
“Yes. That's what the investigation concluded.””
“Then why did someone send me that message?””
Eleanor glanced at Daniel.
“Because Jonathan had been investigating suspicious financial activity shortly before he died.””
My father leaned forward.
“What kind of activity?””
Eleanor took a breath.
“He discovered that someone had been approaching his investment administrator, pretending to represent his family.””
Daniel opened his laptop.
“Was that before or after his death?””
“Before. He told me someone had asked about transferring money out of the account intended for Emily.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who was it?””
Eleanor hesitated.
“Peter Williams.””
Dad stood.
“My brother?””
“Yes.””
My father walked toward the window.
“Why would Peter contact Jonathan?””
“Jonathan believed Peter was trying to gain access to several family accounts through false authorizations.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Does that mean Peter was involved before I was even born?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“It's possible.””
Eleanor continued.
“Jonathan refused to cooperate. He contacted me the day before the accident and told me to keep every document relating to Emily's inheritance.””
I stared at her.
“And then he died.””
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
My father sat down again.
“Do you believe Peter had something to do with the accident?””
Eleanor shook her head.
“I don't have evidence of that. The accident was investigated, and I won't make an accusation without proof.””
I appreciated her honesty.
“But I do believe he was trying to get access to Jonathan's money,” she added.
Daniel closed his laptop.
“We have enough financial evidence to investigate the transfers. We should not confuse that with evidence about the accident.””
I nodded.
“Can we open the safe deposit box?””
Eleanor smiled faintly.
“Yes.””
That afternoon, we went to the bank.
The manager checked our identification, reviewed the estate documents, and escorted us into a private room.
Eleanor handed me the silver key.
“It's yours to open.””
My fingers shook as I inserted it into the lock.
The box slid out.
Inside were several envelopes, a small velvet pouch, and a thick leather notebook.
I opened the first envelope.
It contained a photograph of Jonathan holding a tiny pair of baby shoes.
On the back, he had written:
For Emily, when she takes her first steps.
My eyes filled.
He had never seen me take those steps.
Yet he had thought about them.
The second envelope contained a list of financial documents.
Daniel examined them carefully.
“Emily, this is important. Your father's original investment portfolio is documented here. The records show that part of the money was transferred without authorization.””
Eleanor nodded.
“I suspected that.””
“How much?”” Dad asked.
Daniel calculated the figures.
“Approximately two hundred and forty thousand dollars was originally allocated to Emily. Some of the funds were moved, but the administrator maintained a separate reserve.””
I looked at him.
“How much remains?””
He checked the final statement.
“One hundred and eighty-six thousand dollars, subject to verification and recovery of the unauthorized transfers.””
I closed my eyes.
There was still hope.
Then I noticed the leather notebook.
My name was written inside the cover.
I opened it.
The first page contained a handwritten note.
If Emily ever reads this, I hope she understands that the people who love her should never make her feel guilty for having a future.
I turned the page.
There was a list of names.
Peter Williams.
Vanessa Williams.
Linda Williams.
And one final name.
Robert.
Beside each name were dates and short notes about financial meetings.
I looked at Daniel.
“Why was Robert involved?””
Eleanor leaned closer.
“Jonathan believed Robert was helping Peter approach people who managed family investments.””
Dad shook his head.
“Robert told me he was only trying to protect Sarah.””
Daniel examined the notes.
“There's a reference here to a meeting at a property company.””
He turned another page.
A handwritten sentence appeared beneath the date.
They have created a second set of records. The original documents are being kept somewhere outside the bank.
I felt a chill.
“Where?””
Daniel read the next line.
Peter said the originals would remain at the old family property until the transfer was complete.
My father looked at Eleanor.
“Which property?””
She pointed toward the address.
It was the same house from the photograph.
The property where Robert had been standing beside Vanessa and Peter.
Daniel immediately photographed the page.
“We need to provide this information to the investigators.””
Dad nodded.
Then my phone rang.
It was Noah.
I answered.
“Hey, buddy.””
His voice was shaking.
“Emily, you need to come home.””
“What happened?””
“Vanessa came back.””
My stomach tightened.
“Where's Dad?””
“Outside. He's talking to her.””
“Are you safe?””
“Yes, but…”
He hesitated.
“Emily, she went into your bedroom.””
I stood up.
“Why?””
“I don't know. But she came downstairs carrying your mother's jewelry box.””
My blood ran cold.
“Did she take anything?””
Noah lowered his voice.
“I think so.””
I heard a door slam in the background.
Then he whispered:
“She just told Dad that if he wants to know what really happened to Sarah, he should ask Peter about the hospital records.””
The call ended.
I looked at Daniel.
“Hospital records?””
He immediately picked up his phone.
“We need to go.””
Dad called again before we reached the car.
His voice sounded broken.
“Emily, come home.””
“What happened?””
He was silent for a moment.
Then he said:
“Your mother left a final medical statement. Vanessa has it.””
I gripped the phone.
“What does it say?””
Dad swallowed.
“According to Vanessa, Sarah changed her will and financial instructions on the day she died.””
I frowned.
“But Daniel has the original documents.””
“I know.””
“Then why does it matter?””
My father answered quietly.
“Because Vanessa says Sarah signed another document that night, naming someone else as the person responsible for everything.””
“Who?””
There was a long silence.

Then Dad said:
“She named Peter.””
