Chapter 11: The Father I Never Knew

I stared at my father.

“My biological father?””

He didn't answer.

The recording continued playing.

My mother's voice sounded weak but determined.

“Emily deserves to know the truth.””

Peter replied.

“She's a child. Why bring this up now?””

“Because you have no right to keep her money.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Sarah, you're seriously going to tell her about him?””

My mother answered immediately.

“Yes.””

Then the recording stopped.

Daniel paused the video.

Nobody spoke.

I turned toward Dad.

“Who was my biological father?””

He sat down on an old wooden chair.

His face looked exhausted.

“Emily, I need you to understand something.””

“Just tell me.””

He took a long breath.

“Your mother and I were together for years. We loved each other very much. But before we married, she had a relationship with another man.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“His name?””

“Jonathan Reed.””

The name meant nothing to me.

Dad continued.

“He died before you were born. Sarah told me about him when we started discussing having a family. I knew there was a possibility you weren't biologically mine.””

I stared at him.

“You knew?””

He nodded.

“But I loved your mother. And when you were born, I chose to raise you as my daughter. I never considered you anything else.””

My eyes filled.

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Sarah wanted to explain it when you were older. We agreed that I would be your father in every way that mattered.””

I looked away.

For sixteen years, I had believed I knew everything about my family.

Now I was learning that even my own identity had been wrapped in secrets.

Daniel spoke gently.

“Emily, your mother's letter explains that Jonathan left money for you as well. That money was separate from the inheritance established by your maternal grandparents.””

I turned toward him.

“How much?””

“Approximately two hundred and forty thousand dollars was placed in a separate account.””

I looked at Dad.

“Was that money stolen, too?””

He nodded slowly.

“It appears that funds from both accounts were moved.””

Robert cleared his throat.

“That's why Sarah was so upset. She wasn't only worried about the money her parents left. She was worried that Jonathan's family had trusted her to protect something for Emily.””

My throat tightened.

“Did Jonathan have a family?””

“Yes,” Robert replied.

“A sister named Eleanor. She was the person who arranged the original account.””

Daniel opened another file.

“I've already found a reference to that account in the legal records. We will need to verify the remaining balance and the transactions.””

Dad looked at Robert.

“Why didn't Sarah tell me all this?””

Robert answered quietly.

“She tried.””

Dad lowered his head.

“She told me she wanted to discuss something important. I was angry that day because Peter had called me about money. I told her we would talk later.””

He stopped.

Then he pressed his palms against his eyes.

“She died before we had another conversation.””

I sat beside him.

For the first time, I understood that Dad had been carrying a different kind of guilt.

He had loved my mother.

He had raised me.

But somewhere along the way, he had allowed other people to make decisions that hurt us both.

I touched his shoulder.

“Dad, you didn't know everything.””

He looked at me.

“I should have.””

Daniel restarted the recording.

We needed to hear the remaining conversation.

My mother's voice returned.

“Peter, I know about the company account. I know Vanessa has been moving money through it.””

Peter sounded irritated.

“You're sick, Sarah. You're imagining things.””

“I have the statements.””

Vanessa interrupted.

“Then what do you want from us?””

“I want the money returned. I want Emily protected. And I want you both to stay away from her inheritance.””

There was a long silence.

Then Peter spoke.

“You're making a mistake.””

My mother's answer was firm.

“No. My mistake was trusting you.””

The recording ended.

Robert looked at Dad.

“Sarah asked me to keep a copy in case something happened to her.””

Dad stood.

“Why didn't you go to the police?””

“Because she asked me to wait until Daniel could review the documents. She was afraid a premature confrontation would make the situation worse.””

Daniel nodded.

“Now we have enough material to begin formal proceedings.””

I looked at the frozen image of my mother on the laptop.

“There's something I don't understand.””

Everyone turned.

“If Jonathan's family gave Mom money for me, why did Vanessa care so much about it?””

Daniel opened another document.

“Because there was a condition attached to the account. The money was intended to be released to you once your identity and inheritance rights were independently confirmed.””

I frowned.

“My identity?””

He nodded.

“Your biological father's family wanted to ensure that the beneficiary was properly documented.””

Dad looked confused.

“Does that mean there are other records?””

“Yes,” Daniel said.

“And I believe your mother left instructions for us to contact Jonathan's sister.””

Robert suddenly stood.

“There's another thing.””

Dad turned.

“What now?””

Robert looked uncomfortable.

“Peter didn't act alone. He had help from someone who worked with the bank.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Do you have evidence?””

Robert nodded.

He reached into his coat and removed a folded piece of paper.

“This was given to me by Sarah.””

Daniel opened it.

A bank employee's name was written across the top.

I recognized it immediately.

It belonged to a woman who had visited our house several times when I was younger.

A woman Vanessa always introduced as her friend.

*Linda Williams.*

Dad looked at me.

“Vanessa's sister.””

Robert nodded.

“She was the person who processed the original transfers.””

And then Daniel noticed something at the bottom of the page.

A handwritten instruction from my mother.

If Linda is involved, check the account ending in 9042.

Daniel immediately reached for his phone.

Because the account number belonged to a bank account that was still active.

And the registered owner wasn't Vanessa.

It was Kayla.
