Chapter 1: The Lie That Almost Cost Me My Home

The first thing my stepmother did after my stepsister accused me of attacking her was slap me.

The second thing she did was demand that my father throw me out.

And the worst part? For one terrible moment, my father looked ready to do exactly that.

I stood in the kitchen, staring at the broken glass scattered across the white tile.

Kayla was sitting on the floor, clutching her left arm as if someone had nearly torn it from her body. Her long blonde hair hung over her face, and tears streamed down her cheeks.

“Mom! She attacked me!””

I blinked at her.

“What?””

“She pushed me!”” Kayla cried.

“I told her to leave my things alone, and she grabbed me!””

“Kayla, stop lying. I didn't touch you!””

My sixteen-year-old stepsister looked up at me. For half a second, her crying stopped.

Then she screamed even louder.

Vanessa came rushing down the stairs.

“What happened?””

“Mom!”” Kayla sobbed.

“Emily went crazy!””

Vanessa didn't even ask what had happened.

She crossed the kitchen and slapped me.

The sound cracked through the room.

My head snapped sideways. A burning sensation spread across my cheek, and my ears rang.

“How dare you hurt my daughter?”” Vanessa shouted.

I pressed my fingers against my face.

“Vanessa, I didn't—”

“Don't you dare talk back to me!””

Kayla buried her face against her mother's waist.

“I was just asking her to leave my makeup alone,” she whispered.

“Then she grabbed my arm.””

I looked at the small makeup bag lying beside the counter.

It wasn't mine.

“That's not even true,” I said.

“She came in here after I did. I was checking my phone.””

Vanessa pointed toward the floor.

“And that glass?””

“Kayla knocked it over!””

Kayla gasped as if I'd just threatened her.

“You're blaming me?””

“Because you did it!””

“Enough!””

My father's voice came from the doorway.

Michael had just returned from work. His jacket was still on, and his keys were in his hand.

He looked from the broken glass to Kayla's red face, then at me.

“What's going on?””

Vanessa immediately changed her expression.

She wrapped one arm around Kayla and spoke in a trembling voice.

“Michael, I think something is seriously wrong with Emily.””

My stomach tightened.

“Dad, please listen to me.””

Kayla sniffled.

“She pushed me into the counter.””

My father frowned.

“Emily?””

“No. I didn't touch her.””

“She threatened me, too,” Kayla added.

“She said if I told you, she'd make things worse.””

“That's ridiculous!”” I shouted.

Vanessa stepped between us.

“Lower your voice. You're frightening her.””

I stared at my father.

“Dad, you know Kayla has lied about me before.””

His expression hardened.

“She says you hurt her. Did you put your hands on her?””

“No!””

“Then why is she crying?””

I couldn't answer.

Not because I didn't have an answer.

Because I suddenly understood that he was already choosing which story he wanted to believe.

For six years, Vanessa had made sure I was the problem in every disagreement.

When Kayla broke my laptop, I was careless.

When my clothes disappeared from the laundry room, I was supposed to have misplaced them.

When money vanished from Dad's desk, Vanessa suggested I might have borrowed it without asking.

And every time, I had been told to apologize.

I looked at my father.

“Please, Dad. Just ask her what happened before you came home.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Michael, I've warned you about this. Emily has become increasingly aggressive. I didn't want to upset you, but I can't keep protecting everyone from her behavior.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“Protecting everyone from me?””

Vanessa turned toward my father.

“I'm afraid Kayla isn't safe when the two of them are alone.””

Kayla nodded against her shoulder.

My father rubbed his forehead.

“Maybe we need some distance.””

“What does that mean?””

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he said the words I would remember for the rest of my life.

“Perhaps you should stay with Aunt Rachel for a while.””

I stared at him.

“Dad, you're sending me away?””

“Just until things calm down.””

“I didn't do anything!””

Vanessa walked to the counter, grabbed my backpack, and threw it toward the front door.

“Then this shouldn't be a problem.””

My backpack landed on its side. My schoolbooks slid halfway out.

I looked at my father, waiting for him to tell her to stop.

He didn't.

My hands began shaking.

I bent down to pick up my books.

Then a small voice came from the hallway.

“Dad, don't make Emily leave.””

Everyone turned.

Noah stood there in his dinosaur pajamas, holding a black tablet against his chest.

He was only ten years old, but he looked more frightened than I'd ever seen him.

Vanessa immediately snapped.

“Noah, go upstairs.””

He stayed where he was.

“Dad, I know what happened.””

Kayla's crying suddenly became very quiet.

My father frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Noah walked into the kitchen.

“I saw Kayla.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“That's enough. You're too young to understand what's happening.””

Noah shook his head.

“I understand that Emily didn't touch her.””

Kayla stared at him.

“Don't make things worse, Noah.””

He tightened his grip on the tablet.

“I'm not making anything worse. I'm telling Dad the truth.””

My father looked down at the device.

“Noah, what did you see?””

My little brother swallowed.

“The camera above the refrigerator.””

Vanessa's face lost its color.

Six months earlier, Dad had installed a small security camera in the kitchen after several hundred dollars disappeared from his wallet.

He had forgotten about it.

Noah hadn't.

“I connected it to my tablet,” Noah explained.

“It saves the recordings.””

Vanessa lunged for the device.

“Give that to me!””

But Dad caught her wrist.

“Don't touch him.””

For the first time that evening, Vanessa looked genuinely afraid.

My father turned toward Noah.

“Show me.””

Noah unlocked the tablet.

He pressed a video file.

And as the first image appeared on the screen, Kayla whispered something that made my father go completely still.

“No. That's not supposed to be there.””
