Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Money
The second video showed Madison sitting on the edge of her bed.
Her hands shook as she opened the pink backpack.
Then she pulled out a thick white envelope.
The same kind of envelope Vanessa used for important documents.
My stomach twisted.
I didn’t understand.
Why would Madison take the money?
And why would Vanessa accuse me?
Dad watched the screen without blinking.
Madison slowly lowered her head.
“Daddy…”
“Tell me the truth,” Dad said.
His voice wasn’t angry.
That made it worse.
“Why did you take the money?””
Madison looked at her mother.
Vanessa immediately stepped between them.
“She didn’t steal anything.””
Dad looked at her.
“The video shows her walking into your room and leaving with the envelope.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“She was probably moving it.””
“Ten thousand dollars?””
Nobody answered.
I stood near the wall, still holding Mom’s picture.
A few minutes earlier, I thought I might lose my home.
Now I was watching the people who blamed me try to explain themselves.
Dad pressed another button.
The recording continued.
Madison opened the envelope and counted the money.
Her hands moved quickly.
Then she whispered toward the bedroom door.
“Mom?””
A voice answered.
Vanessa.
“Did you do it?””
My eyes widened.
Dad froze.
The video captured only the hallway, not the room.
But we could hear everything.
“Yes,” Madison whispered.
“I put it in Ethan’s backpack.””
My heart dropped.
Vanessa immediately grabbed the phone from Dad’s hand.
“That’s enough.””
Dad pulled it back.
“No.””
“Michael, she’s a child.””
“She’s your child.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“What is that supposed to mean?””
Dad stared at her.
“It means you’re the adult here.””
Madison started crying.
“I’m sorry.””
Vanessa turned around.
“Madison, don’t say anything.””
That sentence told us everything.
Dad looked at his stepdaughter.
“Why would you do this?””
Madison wiped her face.
“Mom told me you were going to send Ethan away.””
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“Madison!””
But the girl continued.
“She said if Ethan left, everything would be better.””
I felt like someone had punched me.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why do you hate me?””
The question came out before I could stop it.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Vanessa looked at me.
Then she looked away.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” Dad said.
“I think he understands more than you realize.””
Vanessa walked toward the kitchen.
“You’re making a mistake, Michael.””
Dad followed her.
“No. The mistake was believing you when you said you wanted to be a mother to Ethan.””
Her face hardened.
“I tried.””
“No,” Dad replied.
“You wanted the image of being a family. You didn’t want my son.””
The words were quiet.
But they hurt.
I had spent years wondering if I was the problem.
Maybe if I was quieter.
Maybe if I didn’t ask Dad for attention.
Maybe if I acted older.
Maybe Vanessa would finally like me.
But standing there, I realized something.
This was never about me.
Madison sat on the stairs, crying.
I felt angry at her.
But I also saw fear in her eyes.
“Why didn’t you tell the truth?”” I asked.
She looked at me.
“Because Mom said she would leave us.””
I frowned.
“She said if I didn’t help her, she’d disappear and it would be my fault.””
Dad closed his eyes.
Vanessa had used her own daughter.
That was the part that shocked me the most.
Not the money.
Not the lie.
The fact that she had convinced a child to hurt another child.
Then Dad’s phone suddenly rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“Who is it?”” Vanessa asked.
Dad didn’t answer.
He picked up.
“Hello?””
A few seconds passed.
Then his face became serious.
“Are you sure?””
I watched him listen.
Then he looked at me.
And I knew something else had happened.
Something bigger than the stolen money.
Dad slowly lowered the phone.
“The bank called.””
Vanessa went still.
“What did they say?””
May you like
Dad looked at her.
“They said the missing $10,000 wasn’t the only money that disappeared.””
