Chapter 10: The Partner Who Came Back From the Dead
Dad held the phone so tightly that his knuckles turned white.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The voice on the other end breathed calmly, almost like this was just a normal conversation between old friends.
But it wasn’t.
“Mark,” Dad said.
The name sounded strange coming from his mouth.
Like he was saying the name of a ghost.
“You’re alive.””
A quiet laugh followed.
“I never said I wasn’t.””
Dad stood up.
“You let me believe you were dead.””
“No, Michael. You chose to believe what you saw.””
My stomach tightened.
That wasn’t an answer.
That was a confession.
Dad looked at me and put the phone on speaker.
“Where are you?””
Mark laughed again.
“Still protecting Ethan, I see.””
The moment he said my name, I felt a chill.
“How do you know about him?”” Dad asked.
“I know everything.””
Dad’s face hardened.
“You’ve been watching us.””
“Of course.””
I stepped back.
The idea that someone had been watching our family for years made my skin crawl.
“Why?”” Dad demanded.
There was a pause.
Then Mark answered.
“Because your wife got too close.””
Dad froze.
“My wife?””
“Your first wife.””
The room became silent.
My mother.
Mark continued.
“She was smarter than I expected.””
Dad gripped the phone.
“What did she find?””
“You should ask yourself what she didn’t tell you.””
Dad’s eyes narrowed.
“Stop playing games.””
Mark sighed.
“You were always impatient, Michael.””
The confidence in his voice made me angry.
He talked like he still had power.
Like he still owned the conversation.
“Tell me what happened to my wife,” Dad said.
Another pause.
Then Mark replied:
“She found out Vanessa wasn’t working alone.””
Dad looked at me.
“Who else?””
“You already know.””
Dad went still.
“No.””
“Yes.””
The answer came quietly.
“Your mother discovered I never died.””
My heart stopped.
Dad closed his eyes.
“You were involved from the beginning.””
“I was involved because I had to protect myself.””
“You stole from me.””
“I took what I deserved.””
Dad’s voice became colder.
“You destroyed lives.””
Mark laughed softly.
“You still think this is about money.””
I didn’t understand.
Dad didn’t either.
“What else would it be about?””
Mark didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“The inheritance.””
My body went cold.
Dad stepped forward.
“You knew about Ethan’s trust.””
“I knew before Vanessa did.””
That sentence changed everything.
Mark had known about me.
Before Vanessa entered our lives.
Before the accusations.
Before the slap.
Before everything.
Dad hung up.
He looked terrified.
“What happened?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
Finally, he sat down.
“Mark was my closest friend.””
I listened.
“He knew everything about my life. My company. My family.””
“And Mom?””
Dad looked at the floor.
“Your mother didn’t trust him.””
“Why?””
“Because she noticed things I ignored.””
I thought about the letter.
The warnings.
The secrets.
“She knew,” I whispered.
Dad nodded.
“She knew before I did.””
That evening, Detective Harris arrived with new information.
“We found Vanessa.””
Dad stood immediately.
“Where?””
“She turned herself in.””
“Why?””
The detective looked uncomfortable.
“Because she says she has proof that Mark was the one controlling everything.””
Dad exchanged a glance with him.
“Where is she?””
“At the station.””
I expected Dad to be angry.
Instead, he looked exhausted.
“I need to hear what she has to say.””
Before leaving, he looked at me.
“You stay with Detective Harris.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Ethan—”
“I’m tired of everyone deciding things around me.””
Dad stopped.
The words hit him.
I wasn’t a little kid anymore.
Not because I had grown up.
Because secrets had forced me to.
Detective Harris looked at Dad.
“He should hear the truth.””
Dad hesitated.
Then nodded.
At the station, Vanessa sat behind the table.
She looked different.
Not powerful.
Not confident.
Just tired.
When she saw me, her expression changed.
“Ethan.””
I didn’t respond.
She looked down.
“I know you hate me.””
I crossed my arms.
“You tried to get rid of me.””
Her eyes filled with guilt.
“I know.””
Dad sat across from her.
“Start talking.””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“Mark contacted me before I met you.””
Dad’s jaw tightened.
“What did he want?””
She looked at me.
“He wanted information about Ethan.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa continued.
“He told me the inheritance was worth millions.””
I felt sick.
“So you married Dad because of money.””
She closed her eyes.
“At first.””
Dad looked hurt.
“But then?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Then I realized Mark wasn’t planning to share anything.””
The detective leaned forward.
“What do you mean?””
Vanessa whispered:
“He planned to take everything.””
Then she reached into her bag.
“I have proof.””
She placed a small memory card on the table.
“He recorded everything.””
Dad stared.
“Everything?””
Vanessa nodded.
“His entire plan.””
The detective picked up the card.
Before anyone could say another word, Vanessa added:
“But there’s one thing you need to know.””
Dad looked at her.
“What?””
Her voice dropped.
“Mark didn’t just want Ethan’s inheritance.””
May you like
She looked directly at me.
“He wanted Ethan gone.””
