Chapter 11: The Recording That Changed Everything
The memory card sat on the table for almost a minute.
Nobody touched it.
It was strange how something so small could hold the truth about so many people.
Finally, Detective Harris took it.
“We’ll need to analyze this.””
Vanessa nodded.
“You’ll hear everything.””
Dad stared at her.
“Why are you helping us now?””
Vanessa looked away.
For the first time, I saw something other than anger in her face.
Regret.
“Because I thought I could control him.””
She looked at the floor.
“I was wrong.””
Dad didn’t forgive her.
I could see that.
But he listened.
“What did Mark threaten you with?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then whispered:
“He knew about Daniel.””
Dad’s expression changed.
Her first husband.
“He told me if I didn’t cooperate, he would make sure everyone knew what happened.””
“What happened to Daniel?”” Detective Harris asked.
Vanessa’s hands shook.
“I don’t know everything.””
“But you know something.””
She nodded slowly.
“Daniel discovered Mark was moving money through fake companies.””
Dad leaned forward.
“My company?””
“Yes.””
The room became quiet.
Vanessa continued.
“Daniel tried to expose him.””
“And Mark made him disappear.””
She looked down.
“I was scared.””
Dad stared at her.
“You helped him.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
The honesty was almost worse.
I looked at her.
“You blamed me.””
She closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“Why?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because Mark told me if I didn’t make you leave, he would destroy me.””
I didn’t know what to feel.
She had been manipulated.
But she had still hurt me.
She had still chosen me as the target.
Detective Harris returned with a laptop.
“We’re ready.””
Everyone gathered around.
The recording began.
Static.
Then Mark’s voice.
“You understand your role, Vanessa?””
Her voice answered.
“Yes.””
“You get close to Michael.””
A pause.
“And Ethan?””
Mark laughed.
“The boy is the key.””
Dad’s face changed.
The recording continued.
“The trust activates when he turns eighteen. Until then, nobody can access it.””
Vanessa asked:
“What if Michael finds out?””
“He won’t.””
“How do you know?””
“Because Michael trusts the wrong people.””
Dad looked away.
The words hurt because they were true.
The recording continued.
Then came the sentence that made everyone freeze.
“Once Ethan is gone, the trust becomes easier to control.””
My chest tightened.
Dad immediately reached for me.
I stepped closer.
The recording kept playing.
Vanessa’s voice appeared.
“You want me to get rid of a child?””
Mark replied:
“I want you to solve a problem.””
Detective Harris stopped the recording.
Nobody spoke.
The silence was unbearable.
Then Dad said:
“He was planning this for years.””
Detective Harris nodded.
“We need to find Mark immediately.””
But before they could continue, Dad’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at it.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A few seconds passed.
Then Dad’s face changed.
“What?””
He stood up.
“What do you mean he’s gone?””
Detective Harris looked at him.
“What happened?””
Dad slowly lowered the phone.
“Mark disappeared.””
The detective frowned.
“How?””
Dad looked toward Vanessa.
Then at me.
“He was never at the location they were monitoring.””
My heart raced.
“Then where was he?””
Dad looked at the phone.
A new message had appeared.
One photo.
A picture of our house.
Taken from outside.
And standing near the front door was Mark.

The message underneath said:
