Chapter 7: My Mother’s Final Warning
My hands shook as I held the letter.
I knew my mother’s handwriting.
Even after all these years, I recognized every curve of every letter.
The way she wrote my name.
The way she crossed her T’s.
The way her words looked gentle, even when they carried something painful.
Claire stood across from me.
For the first time since I had known her, she looked uncertain.
“Read it,” she said.
But her voice wasn’t confident anymore.
My father stepped closer.
“Ethan, you don’t have to do this right now.””
I looked at him.
“Yes, I do.””
I unfolded the paper completely.
The room disappeared.
For a moment, it was just me and my mother.
Ethan,
If you are reading this, it means Claire has shown you the truth before your father was ready.
My heart tightened.
I looked up.
Claire’s face changed.
She knew.
She knew exactly what was coming.
I continued.
First, I need you to understand something. Your father loves you. He has always loved you. But sometimes love and fear can exist in the same person.
My father lowered his head.
I kept reading.
Your father is a good man, but he trusts people too easily. After I became sick, I noticed things changing around us.
My eyes moved to Claire.
Money disappeared from places where I had kept records. Documents were moved. Conversations stopped when I entered rooms.
Claire immediately stepped forward.
“That’s not proof of anything.””
My father turned toward her.
“Let him finish.””
I continued.
I confronted Claire once. She denied everything. She smiled and told me I was imagining things because I was scared.
My fingers tightened around the letter.
“She knew Mom was sick.””
My father looked devastated.
Claire crossed her arms.
“She was accusing me because she was paranoid.””
But nobody believed her anymore.
I read the next part.
Ethan, I created your account because I wanted you to have a future that nobody could take away from you. I knew there were people who might see your inheritance as an opportunity.
I stopped.
My chest felt heavy.
Then I read the final paragraph.
If Claire ever tries to control that money, do not trust her words. Look at her actions.
The room went silent.
My mother’s final sentence was written darker than the rest.
The people who love you will never ask you to choose between them and the truth.
I lowered the letter.
Nobody spoke.
Claire laughed quietly.
“That’s it?””
Everyone looked at her.
She shook her head.
“You’re all acting like she exposed some huge crime.””
My father stared.
“She warned us about you.””
“No. She wrote a scared woman’s opinion.””
“You accessed Ethan’s account.””
“I was managing family finances.””
“Without permission.””
Claire’s expression hardened.
“I was your wife.””
My father’s voice became cold.
“You were never his guardian.””
That sentence changed everything.
Claire looked at me.
“You really believe them?””
I looked at her.
“I believe my mother.””
For the first time, I saw anger flash across her face.
Not frustration.
Not annoyance.
Real anger.
She stepped closer.
“You have no idea what your mother was like at the end.””
My father immediately moved between us.
“Don’t.””
Claire stopped.
But she wasn’t finished.
“She didn’t trust anyone. Not me. Not you.””
She looked at my father.
“She thought everyone was trying to steal from her.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“Enough.””
Claire grabbed her purse.
“Fine.””
She walked toward the door.
But before leaving, she turned back.
“You want the truth?””
Nobody answered.
She smiled.
“Then ask your father why he never told you what happened the night your mother died.””
My entire body froze.
My father looked at her.
“Claire.””
“What?””
She opened the door.
“Ethan deserves to know.””
Then she walked out.
I turned slowly toward my father.
“What did she mean?””
May you like
He didn’t answer.
And that scared me more than anything Claire had said.
