Chapter 13: The Truth Nobody Could Hide

The room went completely silent.

The only sound was Claire’s own voice coming from the recorder.

“Your mother was never supposed to find out what I did.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Claire stared at the device in my father’s hand.

The confidence she had carried for years was gone.

For the first time, she looked like someone who had finally realized she had nowhere left to run.

My father pressed the button again.

The recording continued.

Claire’s voice filled the room.

“She was getting too close. She kept asking questions. She wouldn’t stop looking through the records.””

My hands became cold.

My father’s face turned pale.

The recording was from years ago.

But Claire sounded exactly the same.

Calm.

Cold.

Like hurting someone was just another problem to solve.

A younger version of Claire spoke.

“I told her to let it go. I told her the account didn’t matter.””

My father looked at Claire.

“The account?””

Claire stepped forward.

“Turn it off.””

“No.””

His voice was different now.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Certain.

The recording continued.

“She said she would tell Mark everything.””

A pause.

Then Claire’s voice lowered.

“I couldn’t let that happen.””

My heart stopped.

My father looked like he had been hit.

“Claire…”

She shook her head quickly.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” I said.

My voice shook.

“I understand.””

She looked at me.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“You lied to me.””

Her face changed.

“You think this is simple?””

“Yes.””

The words surprised me.

“It is simple.””

I pointed at the recorder.

“You knew my mother was protecting me. You knew she trusted someone else because she didn’t trust you.””

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””

My father laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

“You sacrificed my son’s childhood.””

She looked at him.

“I raised him.””

“No.””

His voice became firm.

“You controlled him.””

Claire’s face hardened.

Then she turned toward me.

“Ethan, you need to understand something.””

I didn’t answer.

“You were always going to get everything.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She looked frustrated.

“Your mother built everything around you. Your father revolved around you. Everyone felt sorry for you.””

My stomach tightened.

“So you hated me?””

“No.””

She paused.

“I hated what you represented.””

The honesty hurt more than any lie.

My father stepped forward.

“Leave.””

Claire looked at him.

“You’re choosing him?””

He didn’t hesitate.

“Yes.””

She smiled sadly.

“After everything?””

“Especially after everything.””

Claire picked up her purse.

But before she left, she stopped.

“You think this is over?””

My father stared.

“It is.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Because there’s still one thing your mother didn’t tell you.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What?””

Claire smiled.

“The money wasn’t the only thing she left behind.””

Then she walked out.

The door closed.

I stood there, confused.

My father looked at the recorder.

“Don’t listen to her.””

“But what if she’s right?””

He looked at me.

“Ethan.””

“What else is there?””

My father didn’t answer.

And that scared me.
