Chapter 11: The Hidden Room

Rebecca met us the next morning at a small coffee shop across town.

I expected someone old.

Someone mysterious.

Instead, she was a normal-looking woman in her forties with tired eyes and a folder under her arm.

When she saw me, she smiled sadly.

“You look like her.””

My chest tightened.

“My mom?””

She nodded.

“Your eyes.””

My father sat down.

“You said my wife trusted you.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“She did.””

“Why didn’t you come to me?””

Rebecca looked away.

“Because she asked me not to.””

My father swallowed.

“What exactly did she fear?””

Rebecca opened the folder.

Inside were copies of documents.

“She feared Claire was trying to gain control over Ethan’s inheritance.””

I looked through the papers.

There were signatures.

Dates.

Financial records.

Then I saw something.

A transfer request.

Claire’s name.

My stomach turned.

“She really did this.””

Rebecca nodded.

“She tried.””

“Why didn’t she succeed?””

“Because your mother found out first.””

My father looked at Rebecca.

“What happened after?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“Your wife confronted your mother.””

The room became quiet.

“What do you mean?””

“They argued.””

“About money?””

Rebecca nodded.

“Your mother told Claire she would expose everything.””

My father looked shocked.

“She never told me.””

Rebecca’s eyes softened.

“Because your mother was trying to protect you.””

I looked down.

Protect him.

Protect me.

Everyone kept saying that.

But my mother had been the only person who actually did.

Rebecca reached into her bag.

“She gave me this.””

She placed a small envelope on the table.

My name was written on it.

My hands shook.

“Why didn’t you give this to me before?””

“Because your mother told me to wait until Claire revealed herself.””

I looked at my father.

“She knew?””

Rebecca nodded.

“She believed Claire would eventually show her true intentions.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a small note.

Ethan, if you are reading this, you are old enough to know the truth.

My eyes blurred.

Never let anyone convince you that kindness means weakness.

I continued reading.

The person who hurts you most is often the person who believes you will stay silent.

I stopped.

Because those words felt exactly like my life.

Rebecca pointed to the back of the note.

“There’s an address.””

I turned it over.

An old storage facility.

My father immediately stood.

“We’re going.””

The storage unit was dusty and forgotten.

The manager opened it with the key from the wooden box.

Inside was a single locked cabinet.

My father stared.

“How did Claire not find this?””

Rebecca answered quietly.

“Because your mother never told anyone.””

I used the key.

The cabinet opened.

Inside were folders.

Photos.

And one envelope marked:

*FINAL PROOF*

My father reached for it.

But I stopped him.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I want to open it.””

He nodded.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a document.

And a handwritten message.

My mother’s handwriting.

Claire will deny everything.

She will say I misunderstood.

She will say I was afraid.

Then the final line.

But I recorded the conversation where she admitted what she planned to do.

I looked up.

“A recording?””

Rebecca nodded.

“Your mother made a copy.””

My father stared.

“Where?””

I searched through the folder.

There was a small note attached.

A location.

A date.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Claire.

I opened it.

*Come home now. Your father needs to see what I found.*

My stomach tightened.

Because underneath the message was a photo.

May you like

A photo of Claire holding something.

Something that looked exactly like the recording my mother had hidden.
