Chapter 4: The Video My Mother Left Behind
The screen of Claire’s phone glowed in the dark room.
I couldn’t move.
My mother’s voice had only played for three seconds, but it felt like someone had opened a door I had spent years trying to find.
A door to the past.
A door my father had locked.
Claire held the phone between us like she knew she had all the power.
“Go ahead, Mark,” she said softly.
“Tell him why you never showed him this.””
My father’s face was pale.
“Claire, turn that off.””
“Why?””
“Because Ethan doesn’t need to hear this.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
“I do.””
My father looked at me.
“Ethan…”
“No. My entire life, everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me. But nobody ever asks what I want.””
The room went silent.
Claire’s lips curled slightly.
“Exactly.””
My father looked hurt.
But he didn’t argue.
Claire pressed play.
The video was shaky.
My mother appeared on the screen sitting at the kitchen table of our old house.
The house I barely remembered.
She looked tired, but she was smiling.
“Mark,” she said, looking directly into the camera, “if you’re watching this, something happened that I was afraid of.””
My breathing stopped.
My father looked away.
My mother continued.
“I need you to listen carefully. Ethan is still young, and he trusts people too easily. That’s why I need you to be honest with him.””
Claire watched me carefully.
Like she was waiting for me to break.
My mother touched a small folder sitting beside her.
“The account I created for Ethan is not just money. It’s proof that I was thinking about his future.””
My hands clenched.
“Before I passed away, I found out someone had been asking questions about it.””
My father looked at Claire.
Claire immediately stepped forward.
“Turn it off.””
But my father didn’t move.
My mother continued.
“I don’t want to accuse anyone without proof. But if something happens to the account, I need Ethan to know one thing.””
The video froze for a moment.
Then my mother smiled sadly.
“That money was never meant for anyone except my son.””
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Claire.
“What does that mean?””
She crossed her arms.
“It means your mother was paranoid.””
My father’s head snapped toward her.
“Don’t talk about her like that.””
Claire laughed.
“Why? Because she left behind a warning?””
My father stepped closer.
“You knew about this video.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Claire didn’t answer.
That silence was worse than a confession.
I looked at my father.
“You knew she recorded this?””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“You knew for years?””
“I found it after she died.””
“And you never showed me?””
My father rubbed his face.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Claire walked toward the table and placed the envelope down.
“Your father found the video. Then he found the financial records.””
I looked at her.
“What records?””
Her smile returned.
“The records showing money was moved.””
My father’s expression changed.
“Claire.””
“No. He deserves the truth.””
She looked at me.
“Your father discovered the account had been accessed.””
“By who?””
Nobody answered.
Then my father quietly said:
“By Claire.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Claire’s face changed.
Only for a second.
Then she recovered.
“That’s not the full story.””
“Then explain it,” my father said.
She looked at him.
“I needed the money.””
My stomach twisted.
“You needed my mother’s money?””
“It wasn’t like that.””
“How was it not like that?””
Claire slammed her hand on the table.
“Because I was trying to save this family!””
I stepped back.
“What family?””
Her eyes narrowed.
“The family your father promised me.””
My father stared at her.
“I never promised you my son’s inheritance.””
Claire laughed.
“You promised me everything would belong to all of us.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
Their argument grew louder.
I stood frozen between them.
Then Claire picked up her phone again.
“There’s still one thing you don’t know.””
My father immediately went silent.
“What did you do?””
Claire looked at me.
“I didn’t just find your mother’s account.””
My heart started racing.
“What else?””
She smiled.
“I found the original agreement.””
My father’s face changed.
“Claire, don’t.””
She ignored him.
“The document your mother signed before she died.””
My father stepped forward.
“Give me that.””
But Claire pulled the papers away.
“You’re afraid because if Ethan reads this…”
May you like
She looked directly at me.
“He’ll finally know why his father chose silence.””
