Chapter 5: The Secret Agreement
The next morning, I woke up feeling like my entire life had shifted overnight.
The same bedroom.
The same posters on my wall.
The same school backpack sitting by the door.
But everything felt different.
Because now I knew there were secrets hidden inside my own house.
Secrets everyone else knew except me.
At breakfast, nobody talked.
Dylan and Lily laughed about something on their phones.
Claire acted like nothing happened.
She poured coffee.
She smiled.
She looked completely normal.
That made me angry.
“How can you act like nothing happened?””
The entire table went quiet.
Claire looked at me.
“Excuse me?””
“You showed me a video of my mother warning Dad about you.””
My father immediately said:
“Ethan.””
“No, Dad.””
I looked at him.
“I’m tired of everyone telling me when I can handle the truth.””
Claire placed her coffee cup down.
“You think you understand everything?””
“I understand enough.””
She smiled coldly.
“You understand a video you barely watched.””
“Because you stopped it.””
“Because your father couldn’t handle the rest.””
My father stood.
“Enough.””
Claire turned toward him.
“No, Mark. Let him know.””
My father stared at her.
“You don’t want that.””
Her expression changed.
For the first time, I saw fear.
Small.
Almost invisible.
But it was there.
I noticed.
My father noticed too.
“What are you hiding?””
Claire looked away.
“I’m not hiding anything.””
“Then show him.””
She didn’t move.
The silence answered for her.
After breakfast, my father took me into his office.
He closed the door.
“I owe you the truth.””
I sat down.
“Then tell me.””
He opened a drawer and removed a folder.
Inside were documents.
Old documents.
“This was your mother’s estate plan.””
I looked through the pages.
Most of it was confusing.
Numbers.
Legal words.
Names.
Then I saw something.
A signature.
Claire’s.
“Why is her name here?””
My father took a deep breath.
“Because after your mother died, Claire helped manage some of the paperwork.””
“She wasn’t even family yet.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
He looked ashamed.
“Because I trusted the wrong person.””
I stared at him.
“What happened?””
My father sat down.
“Your mother had concerns before she passed away.””
“About Claire?””
He nodded.
My chest tightened.
“She knew?””
“She suspected something.””
“What?””
He looked at the folder.
“She believed Claire was trying to get access to things that belonged to you.””
I couldn’t speak.
My father continued.
“But I didn’t believe her.””
The honesty hurt.
“You didn’t believe Mom?””
“I thought she was scared because she was sick.””
His voice cracked.
“I was wrong.””
For a moment, I saw my father differently.
Not as someone who didn’t care.
But as someone who made a mistake and spent years trying to hide from it.
A knock interrupted us.
Claire stood outside.
“We need to talk.””
My father stood immediately.
“No.””
She held up a document.
“Actually, you do.””
My eyes went to the paper.
“What is that?””
Claire looked at me.
“The agreement.””
My father stepped in front of me.
“Leave.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
She held the document tighter.
“Because Ethan deserves to see what his mother signed.””
My father’s face went pale.
“What does it say?””
Claire smiled.
“You already know.””
I looked between them.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
Claire walked closer.
“The agreement says that if anything happened to your father…”
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
She looked at my father.
Then back at me.
“I would become the person responsible for managing your inheritance.””
The room went completely silent.
And suddenly, I understood why she had spent years trying to make me feel small.
May you like
Because she wasn’t just trying to hurt me.
She was trying to control what belonged to me.
