Chapter 4: The Voice That Changed Everything

The room felt smaller after the recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

I stood beside my dad, holding onto his hand because I suddenly felt like I was the only person who didn’t know what was happening.

Amanda stared at the device.

Then she looked at my father.

“That proves nothing.””

Her voice was different now.

Not confident.

Not calm.

Desperate.

Dad slowly turned toward her.

“It proves you said those words.””

Amanda shook her head.

“I was angry. I didn’t mean it.””

Karen, the woman beside Dad, looked down at her notes.

“But that wasn’t the only recording.””

Amanda’s face changed again.

“What?””

Dad looked at Karen.

“You said there was more?””

Karen nodded.

“When you gave Ethan the device, you asked him to keep it with him if he ever felt unsafe. The device records short audio clips when it detects unusual conversations.””

I didn’t fully understand what that meant.

But Amanda did.

She stepped backward.

“You recorded me?””

Dad’s eyes narrowed.

“No. It recorded what happened around Ethan.””

Amanda laughed nervously.

“This is insane.””

Dad didn’t respond.

He just looked at me.

“Ethan, can you tell me everything?””

I swallowed.

For weeks, I had kept everything inside.

The noodles.

The empty plates.

The way Amanda looked at me when Dad wasn’t home.

The way I stopped asking for things because I already knew the answer.

“I didn’t want to make you upset,” I whispered.

Dad’s expression softened.

“Buddy…”

“I thought maybe I was being difficult.””

His eyes became wet.

“No.””

The word came out immediately.

“No, Ethan. You were never the problem.””

I looked down.

I had spent so many days wondering if I was just being ungrateful.

Maybe I was supposed to be happy with whatever I got.

Maybe kids weren’t supposed to ask for the same things other kids had.

Then Lily stepped closer.

“Daddy?””

Dad looked at her.

“She always told me Ethan was different.””

Amanda quickly interrupted.

“Lily, stop.””

But Lily shook her head.

“She said he wasn’t really part of our family.””

Dad closed his eyes.

That hurt him more than anything else.

Because Lily wasn’t repeating a rumor.

She was repeating something she had heard in her own home.

Amanda looked around the room.

“I never treated him badly.””

I almost laughed.

But I didn’t.

Because seven-year-olds don’t always know how to defend themselves.

They just remember.

Dad walked toward the kitchen.

He opened the refrigerator.

Inside were empty shelves where our family food used to be.

Then he opened the cabinet.

The noodles were stacked neatly.

A whole box.

Just for me.

Dad stared at them.

“You bought these?””

Amanda crossed her arms.

“He likes noodles.””

I looked at the floor.

I didn’t say anything.

Because I didn’t.

Dad slowly turned.

“Ethan.””

I looked up.

“Do you like noodles?””

I hesitated.

Then shook my head.

“No.””

That answer broke something in the room.

Amanda looked annoyed.

“You’re making this dramatic.””

Dad looked at her.

“My son just told me he was afraid to say he didn’t like his own meals.””

Karen quietly stepped forward.

“There is one more thing.””

Everyone looked at her.

She reached into her bag and pulled out a small envelope.

Amanda immediately became tense.

“What is that?””

Karen looked at Dad.

“The reason I came here tonight.””

Dad took the envelope.

He opened it carefully.

Then his face changed.

Confusion.

Shock.

Then anger.

“What is this?””

Amanda said nothing.

Dad looked at her.

“Why did you request changes to Ethan’s school records?””

My stomach dropped.

School records?

Amanda’s face became completely pale.

“I…”

Dad stared at her.

“You told the school I was unavailable?””

Silence.

“You told them you were Ethan’s only legal guardian while I was gone?””

Amanda looked away.

And that was the first moment I realized something.

This wasn’t only about food.

The noodles.

The chicken.

The things she gave Lily and refused to give me.

Those were just the things I could see.

There were things happening that I didn’t understand.

Dad folded the paper.

Then he said something that made Amanda stop breathing.

“Why were you trying to separate my son from me?””

Amanda looked up.

May you like

And for the first time…

she looked scared.
