Chapter 13: The Night Everything Changed
The message stayed on Dad’s phone screen for only a few seconds.
Then he turned it off.
But everyone had already seen his face.
Everyone knew something had happened.
I looked at Amanda.
She looked like she already knew what question was coming.
Dad’s voice was quiet.
“Amanda.””
She didn’t answer.
“What happened the night Ethan’s mother died?””
The room became completely silent.
Amanda sat down slowly.
Her hands started shaking.
“I knew this day would come.””
Dad stared at her.
“You told me everything about that night.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I told you what I could handle telling you.””
Dad looked hurt.
“What does that mean?””
Amanda looked at me.
Then away.
“It means I lied.””
My chest tightened.
Not because I was surprised.
Because every secret seemed to hurt more than the last.
Dad stepped closer.
“What did you lie about?””
Amanda took a deep breath.
“The night your mother died… she wasn’t alone.””
Dad froze.
“Who was with her?””
Amanda looked down.
“Evan.””
The name filled the room.
Dad’s face changed.
“Why?””
“Because he came to ask about the trust.””
Dad’s hands curled into fists.
“He threatened her?””
Amanda nodded slowly.
“She told him no.””
I listened carefully.
Because this was about my mother.
About the person I barely remembered.
Amanda continued.
“Your mother called me afterward.””
“Why didn’t she call me?””
Amanda looked at Dad.
“Because she knew you would confront him.””
Dad looked away.
“She wanted to protect you.””
The words hurt him.
Because he realized his wife had spent her final moments protecting everyone else.
Amanda continued.
“She asked me to take Ethan away from the house.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because Evan knew about the money.””
She looked at me.
“And he knew you were the person who would inherit it.””
Dad looked confused.
“Then why didn’t you tell me about Evan?””
Amanda’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because your mother made me promise.””
“A promise?””
“She said if something happened to her, I had to protect Ethan first.””
I looked at her.
“By being mean to me?””
Amanda closed her eyes.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I failed.””
That was the first time she said it without excuses.
“I became angry. I became jealous. I let my own feelings destroy the one thing your mother trusted me with.””
Dad didn’t speak.
Neither did I.
Then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
Karen immediately stood.
But it wasn’t Evan.
It was a police officer.
Dad looked confused.
“What’s going on?””
The officer held a small envelope.
“We found this near your property.””
Dad took it.
The officer looked at me.
“It has your name on it.””
My hands went cold.
Dad opened the envelope carefully.
Inside was a letter.
Not long.
Only a few lines.
He read it silently.
Then handed it to Karen.
Her expression changed.
“What?””
Dad looked at me.
“It’s from Evan.””
I swallowed.
“What does it say?””
Karen read it.
Then looked at Dad.
“He says he wants to meet Ethan.””
“No.””
Dad answered immediately.
The officer nodded.
“That’s what I expected.””
Then Karen noticed something else inside the envelope.
A second piece of paper.
She unfolded it.
And her face changed.
“What?””
She looked at Amanda.
“This isn’t from Evan.””
Everyone froze.
“Then who is it from?””
Karen slowly turned the paper around.
There was one sentence.
One name.
And the moment Dad saw it…
he whispered:
May you like
“That’s impossible.””
Because the person who wrote the second note was someone we all thought was gone forever.
